I am the engine of your sailing (Sing Street)

Before you came into this world, I was the one who suffered alone. We were six years apart, and those six years of endless parental bickering made it clear to me that maybe they were together because they wanted to have sex, and I was just the product of their unintentional touch. Rock'n Roll is a risk. You rick to be ridiculed at the risk of being ridiculed. I'm going to shake my hair and shout out my anger, I'm going to jump out of my statement with the heaviest makeup, I'm going to get girls' attention in the flashiest clothes, and I'm going to pursue my dreams. I want to leave.

Do you know our mother? She used to be a romantic too. She'll admire the most popular music video of the moment, complimenting the good-looking bass player in it. She wanted to go on vacation to Spain but never made it, she imagined the messy backyard as the Iberian Peninsula, reclining on the steps, basking in the sunset, reading, drinking, when the last rays of the sun were obscured She turned and returned to the family she had been trapped in for twenty years. She recently fell in love again, with a taxi driver, maybe she's obsessed with the thrill of being on the road. She is leaving.

You told me you started a band because you fell in love with a girl, and I think that's the best reason. But I can't make you into a shitty cover band, so I smashed your tapes. You have to have your own style, your own mood, like Duran Duran. Your futuristic masterpiece, The Model Mystery, has filled me with confidence and hope in you. Laughing is the price you pay to play rock, and happy sadness is the price you pay for loving and being loved. Express your indignation at the school's baring and the old-fashioned director of the teaching department in the music, and thank the friends who are crazy with you by your side and the girl who shed tears for you. When you and your band are on the runway and ready to take off, forget me as a rotten leaf, and use me as your engine to get you out of this gloomy land. You shake your hair and shout out your anger, you put on the heaviest makeup to jump out of your declaration, you wear the flashiest clothes to attract the attention of girls, you are going to pursue your dreams. You are leaving.

I sent you to elope, and I envy your dream of jumping on your grandfather's boat without hesitation and sailing to the other side of the sea. Never do it half way, there is no half way in art and in your life. Take your rock and love to the extreme. I'm going to stay and I know whether it's sunny or windy, I'll see you waving to me from the other side of the island.

Sing Street quotes

  • Eamon: So how do you mean you're "happy-sad"?

Darren: Yeah, how're we supposed to market that?

Conor: It means we're not pop anymore.

Eamon: We were pop? Listen, I'm happy being anything. I just want to play music.

Conor: That's fine. Be who you are, Eamon.

    Eamon: Well, I don't know who I am. Maybe I'm happy-sad, too. I don't know.

  • Darren: What does "happy-sad" even mean? How can we be both things? It makes no sense.

Conor: It means that I'm stuck in this shithole full of morons and rapists and bullies, and I'm gonna deal with it, okay? It's just how life is. I'm gonna try and accept it and get on with it, and make some art.

Eamon: So how does that affect our music?

    Conor: Positively.
