Probably the most beautiful movie I have watched this year. The beauty of the countryside, the beauty of nature, and the beauty of youth are all in sight. The isolated countryside of Switzerland, the snow-capped mountains in the distance, the cows in front of you, the half-person tall flowers and plants, coupled with a not compact story and two twilight old people, the effect is amazing.
I thought it was youth, but actually it was old age. A retired musician and a director who specializes in making female films, two friends who have had a relationship for decades, meet together to live in seclusion, walk in the country, recall youth, and talk about what they think is good. In the eyes of outsiders, they are all successful people, but in the face of birth, old age, sickness and death, everyone is weak. Once the skin becomes loose and unresponsive, it is necessary to count a few times a day and urinate a few drops at a time. Exclaimed: It turned out that there is no problem, but I am old without knowing it. I forget every day, and I also remember, forgetting good things, remembering regrets, maybe even the parents can't remember the appearance, but they never forget the girl who is adolescent.
Only by contrast can the story be told, so such a pair of friends have completely different attitudes towards aging. Compared with the musician's indifference and desirelessness, the director is full of disobedience. Musicians and daughters, directors and actors, one old and the other young, constitute the two main lines of the film, so there is a clear contrast between the young and the old.
Faced with marital problems, the daughter can let herself be alone, crying until the bathtub collapses and the room is flooded, but after crying, washing her face, putting on makeup, and putting on an evening gown, she can still be radiant and start over. Even if the musician still has the heart, he has no strength, so he can only speak to his friends and imagine the feelings of the lover in his dream.
On the other side, the old director who wants to make a great posthumous work, and the young actor who wants to create a great role, have the same predicament but different endings. When the actor realizes that the role he has played for many years is because of fear rather than desire, he has time to wake up, and some time to change. When the director realizes the absurdity of the title of female visual director he has advertised for many years, he can There is not much to do, only a leap. The age gap, in this contrast, seems too cruel.
The best part of the film is not in the story itself, but in the way it is told. Group plays are mostly lonely, solo plays are full of harmony, and several climax plays that should have erupted into conflict all show calmness and restraint, but it is this kind of restraint that can make people cry.
This is the third Paolo Sorrentino film I watched. It was once beautiful by "A Beautiful City", confused by "The Result of Love", and today I was moved by "Young and Vigorous".
