Freedom has a price

The little girl Maja was born in Iran. During the Islamic revolution, the social situation was turbulent. Anyone who was hostile to the government and participated in the uprising was arrested, along with their family members. Even with young girls, because the law stipulates that virgins cannot be executed, the government forces will marry the young girl to a revolutionary soldier, take her virginity, and then execute it. Because Marga's uncle also participated in the armed coup, Marga was deeply influenced by revolutionary ideas since she was a child. In order not to harm their daughter, Margaret's parents sent her to France.
There are no relatives or friends here. In an open and free France, Margaret met friends, no longer wearing a headscarf, she danced, smoked, and lived a traditional French life. She tried to fit in, and when asked, she also said she was French. Later, he met a man in Vienna, and they fell in love quickly. However, one day, when Ma Jia came home after buying a croissant, she suddenly met her man who was having sex with another woman. She was angry, helpless, and missed her hometown even more. Just in this painful thought, Ma Jia, who suffered from severe sore throat because of long-term smoking and marijuana, collapsed on the side of the road.

When she woke up, Ma Jia realized that the war in Iran did not kill her when she was a child, but she almost died in a trivial love in a foreign land. She called her father, and she returned to Iran on the premise that he would never ask about life in France.

However, she did not expect how much she wanted to integrate in France, but she was still considered a foreigner, and when she returned to Iran, she was still considered a stranger by relatives and friends. It is still closed and in decline, and the end of the armed coup has ushered in the Iran-Iraq war. Women must wear headscarves, all entertainment is not allowed, alcohol is forbidden, unmarried ladies are not allowed to meet men... She is afraid of meeting people and hides at home every day. Feeling the boundless pain of Ma Jia, she drank a large bottle of sleeping pills. In her dream, she saw the God she dreamed of when she was a child. God told her that she was still far away from death and that she needed to be refreshed.
In this way, Ma Jia continued to go back to school and study with her girls. She met her future husband. The two held hands on the street and were met by the patrol team. Ma Jia was put in the detention center. Finally, her father paid for her to be redeemed. In this way, she had to choose to get married. But the war was still tense, and Maggie felt that she could no longer adapt to this cage-like life. She wants to smoke, to drink, to accept all enlightened cultures, and to be free. The military is still oppressing, and the internal and external wars are still going on. After her uncle and friends died in the war, she realized how small her suffering was. On the other hand, she finds that she no longer loves her husband, and even marriage has become a bondage.
She decided to leave here and return to true freedom.

Marga is sad to be separated from her parents and her beloved grandma. But she will always remember what her grandmother said: freedom always has a price.

At first I thought it was a warm growth film, but later I found out that the whole movie is a black and white movie with a gray tone (and then suddenly remembered the "Kite Runner" I once watched, because of too extreme religious beliefs, this It is understandable that the young actors of this film were later subjected to religious persecution in real life and had to go into exile. Perhaps the director did not conduct real casting for this reason, but used an animated film to interpret). From the growth of little Marga, she looks at growth, war, love, and freedom from the perspective of women. What impressed me was what Grandma Ma Jia said after learning that Ma Jia was tortured by life and love (also what the author of the novel wanted to elaborate):
In your life, you will meet a lot of assholes, and if they hurt you, it's because of their stupidity. Do not respond to their evil deeds, because there is nothing worse than resentment and revenge. Always maintain self-esteem and self.

Persepolis quotes

  • Marjane as a teenager: Promise you won't ask me any questions.

  • Marjane's grandmother: [watering flowers] Ha. Serves them right. Why you practically snipped off their little thingies. Will you please take off that god-awful veil? It makes me claustrophobic.

Marjane as a teenager: [takes off her veil] I'm so used to it, I forget I'm wearing it.
