Mare, a middle-aged female detective in the small area of Dongcheng, has the same pronunciation as the back of Nightmare, which is also the origin of the translation of the play title. Personally, I think "Dongcheng Mel" is better. Although the overall story is very dark and depressing, there is no need to scare the audience with a name similar to a horror movie.
Mare is upright, level-headed, and has top-notch crime-solving skills. The story begins with the murder of a teenage mother and leads to a series of cases, even involving cases from many years ago.
Because Dongcheng is too small, the informants, witnesses and even the suspects encountered during the detection are all acquaintances, ex-husband, ex-husband's friend, ex-husband's child, daughter, daughter's classmate, daughter's friend, relative, relative's employee, classmate, Friends of classmates, children of classmates, it is often difficult to distinguish the boundaries between work and life. Her best friends and classmates have experienced or are experiencing various criminal cases, and her own family life is even more chaotic.
In my opinion, she is like a police officer in a domestic police station. She needs both internal management and 24-hour field duty, which is not in line with the criminal police imagination in ordinary people's minds. However, in this way, it outlines a real and believable character image with flesh and blood. Like ordinary people, she encounters constant conflicts in work and life, and is always constantly weighing and comparing, and the results of her choices are also often overlooked. She also has a lot of troubles, a lot of confusion, and she is also struggling in her heart. What's more troublesome is that due to her professional background, it is difficult to find a suitable person to talk to. The only person to talk to in the play, a university literature professor, left the local school at the end of the play. Fortunately, her best friend classmates and her family encouraged her, comforted her, and strengthened her at the most critical time.
The end of the story may be like the famous saying, life is like this, ups and downs, constantly encountering different people, and then silently watching them go away.
