A "Manchester by the Sea" in a sci-fi coat

This is a "Manchester by the Sea" in a sci-fi garb, another movie full of grief, and another life full of guilt. When a person makes a mistake, how can he be redeemed? How do you get forgiveness? Can you forgive yourself? In the movie, the female protagonist who has just been admitted to MIT drives drunk and kills the male protagonist's pregnant wife and son. Four years in prison did not bring Rhoda redemption, and she was still engulfed by guilt. She allowed herself to live an ascetic life and tried her best to make up for the male lead, but many things, once they happened, could never be undone. We can only carry this self-blame and pain through this life until we die. This unsolvable problem in the real world, the movie solved with science fiction. In another parallel world, the car accident didn't happen. But in real life, there is no parallel world.

Another Earth quotes

  • Richard Berendzen: Within our lifetimes, we've marveled as biologists have managed to look at ever smaller and smaller things. And astronomers have looked further and further into the dark night sky, back in time and out in space. But maybe the most mysterious of all is neither the small nor the large: it's us, up close. Could we even recognize ourselves, and if we did, would we know ourselves? What would we say to ourselves? What would we learn from ourselves? What would we really like to see if we could stand outside ourselves and look at us?

  • John's Son: What rhymes with "light"?

    John Burroughs: "Light"?

Maya Burroughs: Oh, that's a good one.
