Demolition tries to tell us the highest state of life

In "Broken Life," the protagonist's wife is killed by a car before the movie actually begins. But before that, the wife was very dissatisfied with the absent-minded state of the protagonist. This is actually the state of each of us: we are so familiar with our surroundings that our brains have completely shut down and instead live day after day, year after year, like a robot. "You are not paying attention." his wife complained. In "Broken Life", the protagonist has been living in a daze, without really choosing anything, just do whatever is easy. He has been cheating in college, and after meeting a rich girl, he chose a simple and easy-to-make money life in the financial world without hesitation.

But when his wife dies unexpectedly in a car accident, the protagonist's faith collapses. He began to re-examine his life and beliefs. "I start to pay attention, and for some reason, everything starts to become a metaphor." He must have thought that nothing bad would happen to him, and everything in life would be smooth sailing. But his wife died inexplicably like this, and he began to pay attention to the world around him: What is the world really like? How could my wife die when she said she died? Why can't the vending machine be able to handle it without sugar? Why is there such a big gap between the real state of the world and the world I think it is?

When a person's fundamental beliefs collapse, he will begin to doubt his own world, be curious about his own world, and try to study the world to see where his problems lie. So he started to make claims to the vending machine merchants, and started to be honest with himself and communicate with himself. Not only did he write letters, but he also began to open his heart to people he never knew, and used his actions to show the cry in his heart. (pulling the train's brakes) We can also see from this behavior that he started to care less about the consequences of some things after his wife died. And the loss of all kinds of fears has also allowed him to live better in the moment himself.

The only event that wakes us up is a change in our environment: whether it's an external force or our own initiative to change it, whether it's an external environment or an internal belief. In movies, playwrights always allow external forces to change the unchangeable life or beliefs of the protagonist. But in our life, in order to make full use of our brains, we must consciously change our inner beliefs and take the initiative to break the laws and rules of our outer life before we can start a real life

His curiosity about the world led him to start taking apart all kinds of things. The more he understands the things around him, the more he realizes their futility. He dismantled the refrigerator at home, the coffee machine bought in front of his wife, the cubicle in the toilet, the lamp in his mother-in-law's house, the computer in the office, and finally his own home. Although these things look very attractive on the surface, when we really take these things apart, we find that they are actually nothing more than some inconspicuous parts. This is the illusion that modern society gives us, making us live in unrealistic satisfaction, but ignore our own soul.

When we can truly learn to let go of everything, we can truly live in the moment and live like children. Because children never ask what's the meaning of things, they only know how to enjoy play time and use their avatars to indulge in sensory pleasure, which is what we should do.

The meaning of our lives is not what we can leave behind, but what we experience. So the merry-go-round is higher than the scholarship, because the former teaches us how to live in the moment, rather than trying to make the world remember his name like achillies. The merry-go-round doesn't look fancy, but when it works properly, it can bring great joy to the present moment. We don't have to have a Trojan horse, but we have a beautiful time riding on it. So the merry-go-round is a metaphor for the highest realm of life.

Demolition quotes

  • Davis: Dear Champion Vending Company: I put five quarters in your machine and proceeded to push B2, which should have given me peanut M&M's. Regrettably, it did not. I found this upsetting, as I was very hungry, and also my wife had died ten minutes earlier.

  • Davis: You must be Chris.

    Chris: You fucking my mom?

Davis: No, I'm not. We were just sleeping...

Chris: [interrupts] She's fucking crazy. If you haven't noticed, she's a fucking pothead. She calls it cannabis 'cause it makes her feel like less of a fucking pothead.

Davis: You say fuck a lot.

    Chris: So?

Davis: So you're just not using it properly.

Chris: The fuck does that mean?

Davis: That's what I mean. Fuck is a great word, but if you use it too much then it just loses its value and you sound stupid.

    Chris: Fuck you.

Davis: Exactly. I feel nothing and you sound like an idiot. Have a good one.
