From the Heart Despite its 7.8 rating, it's definitely still a movie that's underrated and whose title hasn't been better translated.
People who are willing to take the time to write film reviews will generally feel more emotional about this film, because this film is also about a
A true caring for others is a story that needs to give each other space and time to grieve.
The original English name of the film is Reign over me . This is also the name of the rock song "Reign over me" in which the male protagonist wears headphones to resist the pain every time he faces those painful emotions. The sadness that screams from sadness to all the pain in the song is not a style that most people can accept.
And Reign over me. is an imperative sentence,
Literally translated as:
dominate me
The literal translation can express the song and the theme of the movie very directly. I think maybe because the translator wants to convey that more positive feeling well, rather than showing sadness to scare people away, so let's start from the heart.
To approach a person starts from his "heart".
And interestingly, the subtitle of the poster is
Let in the unexpected.
accept the unwelcome,
Accept what was not accepted before.
Charlie's story
Charlie was an excellent dentist before his family went through 9/11. His wife, three lovely daughters, and even the family's pet dog were killed on 9.11.
Then he became a person. In the eyes of many, his life was a mess, decadent, out of control, and in need of help.
He roamed the city on an electric scooter late at night with headphones on, playing video games to and fro at home, remodeling the kitchen over and over, tearing it down, and redecorating it.
He had trouble trusting his friends. When Alan, an old friend from college, asked him about his life, he would think that the other party was a spy, his temperament changed drastically, and he made a scene.
Alan gradually rebuilds his friendship with Charlie. But as the friendship deepened, the more he wanted to help Charlie. He reaches out to Charlie's boss and one-time best friend for help.
"I used to be Charlie's best friend and our family went on vacation together. But 2001.9.12, it was all over. It had nothing to do with me or my family.
Alan, do you know why Charlie likes you? "
"It's simple, you don't know anything about his original life. He knows you won't ask him questions, he knows you'll go with him."
When Charlie slowly agreed to accept help and actually approached the consulting room, the consultant also gave Charlie a lot of space. The previous few times Charlie was in a sense of insecurity and could not speak. Every time I put on my headphones to listen to the song "reign over me". But in order to promote change in Charlie, the counselor said, you need to say it, you don't have to say it here, but you need to get someone to say it.
After listening to this, Charlie left the consultation room and finally talked to Allen at the waiting area at the door about the painful experience of learning that his family was killed that day. It also includes that he has been renovating and renovating the kitchen because his wife's request to renovate the kitchen before the death was hastily ignored. He was crying while talking. He didn't speak slowly, like a program. And when he finished speaking, Charlie and Alan left.
The film presents a lot of expertise from a counseling perspective, including the symptoms of Charlie's PTSD, as well as resistances and challenges such as facing clients. But in this place, I think the counselor made a mistake. I don't know if it was because of the dramatic need. The counselor did not provide more emotional support and support for family and friends after he had such a traumatic exposure. instructed. And simply let him go.
It indirectly led to Charlie's out-of-control behavior after his emotional out-of-control.
Charlie, on the way back, bought a big bottle. When he got home, he never watched TV and turned the TV to the maximum. He rummaged through the boxes to find the box containing the pistol, but found no bullets. When the landlord came to see him because of a neighbor's complaint, he slipped out the door and took a gun into the street.
After a moment of hesitation, he stopped the taxi driver to cause conflict and quarrel. Holding a revolver without bullets at the policeman's head, with tears in his eyes, he begged the policeman to kill him. (He experienced his own deep pain, with brokenness and sadness in his eyes.)
And I never understood why I was so sleepy when Charlie went to recount the experience. At first I thought it was Adam, who has always done comedy films, that his acting skills in this kind of film were too bad. Later, I realized that the sadness behind that part was too strong. That expression in front of that sadness is as simple as a show.
This grief can be seen in court later. Charlie's parents-in-law have always insisted on helping Charlie without caring about Charlie's feelings. Once again they brought pictures of their daughters to make Charlie remember their daughters better, let's face it.
As long as Charlie saw the photos of his dead wife and children, he fell into a state of extreme panic. Only by putting on headphones, turning up the music to the maximum, and shouting the lyrics of "reign over me" could his symptoms be relieved.
And Charlie went up the elevator from the downstairs outside the courtroom, walked straight to his father-in-law and mother-in-law after getting out of the elevator , then turned back to the elevator door and wanted to go down, then turned around and strode towards them, then turned back , took a step, and finally turned again . Go to the parents-in-law. Only by revealing the true feelings of our father-in-law and mother-in-law after these three re-entry, can we get a glimpse of the deeper our love for him and the deeper the pain:
" I don't want to talk about those things, I don't want to look at the pictures. The truth is, I see them a lot . On the street, when I'm out on the street, I see them on people's faces, more than any of the pictures you bring. The pictures are clear. I understand your pain, but you are company. You are company, and I'm the one who sees them wherever I go. I even see dogs. It's fucking miserable, I Even saw our poodle."
After saying that, Charlie's eyes filled with tears, he stepped forward and kissed Mother Yue's face to say goodbye, said "I love you" , and then turned to leave.
However, just before he entered the elevator, he turned around to look at his father-in-law and said "love you" again.
This is the detail that the subtitles have not translated out, but it is the most moving.
At the end of the film, Charlie finally gets the kitchen renovation done and moves. It's a fresh start, but he's still playing his game in his new home.
However, I think he has slowly found his rhythm and space among everyone.
Other but important parts about this story:
- Allen's line is actually how a man with a midlife crisis finally found a relationship with his family and was willing to open his heart. His voice is worth listening to.
- In addition to the mistakes of the consultant mentioned above, the fact that the consultant brought the visitor to meet his own visitor in the play should be in line with the needs of the plot, but the fact is that it is suspected of violating the ethics of consultation. The first half of the process is still very professional.
- The movie soundtrack is really good!
- The researchers' PTSD epidemiological survey on the 9.11 event showed that the prevalence of PTSD was 17% two months after the event, and decreased to 5.8% six months later.
- When Murphy et al. (2003) investigated parents whose children died abnormally (including accidents, suicides, homicides, etc.) as subjects, their probability of developing PTSD was much higher than that of the normal population, and even 5 years after the event, Some of them still have symptoms of PTSD (27.7 women, 12.5% men)
