The romantic comedy Letters to Juliet once again proves the point. In the Italian city of Verona, well-known as the location for Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet', the likable lead Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) lingers beneath Juliet's balcony, where women tuck love letters into the ancient wall. As her workaholic fiancé travels around Italy collecting recipes and food ingredients, Sophie volunteers to help collect these notes, only to find one from decades earlier.
The letter was written by an English lady Claire (Vanessa Redgrave), who fell in love with an Italian man named Lorenzo as a teenager but they had to part. When Sophie sends the faded letter back, Claire, together with his grandson Charlie (Christopher Egan) and kindly Sophie, go on the search for lost love. However, the search is also silently breeding the new romance.
Letters to Juliet puts together picturesque sceneries, exotic and inviting food, light-hearted conversations, lively and pleasant tunes, and untainted love legends. For those who are too sophisticated to believe in true love, an immediate response after watching it would probably be an exclamation such as "what a wonderful world"! Even a particular group of audience who love to do brain exercises in movies would also not find it insulting to their intelligence, yet the movie is nevertheless cheerfully undemanding.
There are no goofy plots or fumbling misunderstandings . It only seeks to show several adults connecting with each other. The most fatuous assumptions about love are all ripped apart, leaving only the essence of human nature, which is very well demonstrated with a sensible acting approach from the cast.
Since the movie has won the hearts of millions of viewers around the world, more people have flocked to visit what's become known as Juliet's house and the famous courtyard wall which now has love messages written by visitors from all over the world. So my biggest concern now is whether you can still find a crack to put in a letter when you pay a visit there.
On my 1-to-10 movie scale, I give Letters to Juliet a 7.5.
