Elizabeth

Considering this is a historical 1998 film, I somehow forgive the less-than-stellar viewing experience. Although it has won numerous awards, and Cate Blanchett is the female lead, it cannot hide the haste of telling such a complex story in two hours, and the incomprehension of the plot and character performance under the Eastern thinking.

If the whole drama is purely from the perspective of conspiracy and palace fighting, it may not be as exciting as an episode of "The Legend of Zhen Huan". The people in the drama must abide by the ancient creeds and play tricks to serve real interests, so many It seems ridiculous at times. For example, the three priests shouted at Elizabeth in a circle to force her to say a few words that revealed heresy. If you say it, you will die. For example, just because Mary I was soft-hearted and did not sign Elizabeth's execution order, and then a bunch of people who held real power against Elizabeth gnashed their teeth and bowed their heads... But the restraint and rationality revealed here are still admirable, so look at the Middle Ages The political struggle is somewhat endearing. It is probably that the imperial court in the East emphasizes unscrupulous means, and it continues to be more effective in life. Therefore, the way of doing things in the West is a bit puzzling.

The supremacy of the Pope, the Inquisition, the indifference of relatives, friends and neighbors being burned alive... these have indeed existed in the most civilized places today. Faith is especially shameless when it is used as a mask for reality. The world is absurd when the majority feels empowered to punish the minority. Fortunately, the darkest days are over. Although this era is not so forgiving, at least here and now, I still feel free. There is no need to believe in anything, and there is no need to argue anything.

Not to mention a rousing movie I can't always get to the point at the end, if it's just for studying history and seeing Blanchett, "Elizabeth" is still worth watching.

Elizabeth: She had such power over men's hearts. They died for her.

Sir Francis Walsingham: They have found nothing to replace her.

  • Sir Francis Walsingham: Madam, if I may. A prince should never flinch from being blamed for acts of ruthlessness which are necessary for safeguarding the state and their own person. You must take these things so much to heart that you do not fear to strike. Even the very nearest that you have if they be implicated.
