A disappointing mediocre work

I watched half of the "Age of Violence" on a Qatar flight to Paris last month, and now I can finally enjoy the whole picture. Frankly speaking, I was quite disappointed, because I was surprised when I watched "Everything Is Lost" last year, and I still admire the new director's pursuit of aesthetic experimentation. I didn't expect this new work to suddenly switch to the American theme. The style of the whole play is stable and uniform. The best thing is the lighting, art scenery and costume design, which basically restore the original appearance of New York in the 80s. I immediately think of Al Pacino in "The Godfather." The retro taste came out, but the plot story made me feel like chewing wax. Repeatedly speaking, it is nothing more than a "legitimate" businessman who is unscrupulous to realize the American dream, his hidden wife, and a lot of trivial matters about rivals, partners, and brothers. Such stories are commonplace in today's American society. Compared with the fortunes of those stock and real estate Internet tycoons, it is really insignificant. I don't know what the practical significance of this fictitious biography is? Of course, if you ask for praise for the Oscars season, the answer is really obvious. Unfortunately, in the end, only one actress can be nominated. The radiant Oscar Issac didn't even have a chance to be nominated, really. Ironic enough.

J.C. Chandol's script is still very solid, and the plot handling is full of tension. Surprisingly, he has made a simple and open handling of the dramatic conflict, which gives the film an independent temperament, but also makes people feel that it is difficult to enjoy it. Both the gangster daughter and the oil thief have laid the groundwork, but they are useless. They are tossed to the uttermost by civilization and personal standards, and tossed to the end, it is self-willed enough. ★★★★

The story of how a gangster who didn't want to be a gangster struggled to become a gangster. The film is very well done, and it is very different from the previous gangster films.
