Elite Riot is not so elite

Watching Brazil's blockbuster movie "Team Elite", like watching its Olympic football team, is quite disappointing. According to Yun, it caused a lot of controversy when it was screened at the Berlin Film Festival, and was booed when it won the award.
It is not surprising that everyone has different opinions. I just feel that this film cuts directly to the deep problems of Brazilian society and human nature without any arrogance. It is an achievement, but not an achievement.
Works that express social issues are TV social current affairs specials, but they are not necessarily film festival winning works. This is a hierarchy problem.
In Brazil, it can be difficult to make a film that exposes a social issue, and the Berlin Film Festival awards it for political reasons, which I have no objection to, because many times it is necessary to do so. That year, the Berlin Film Festival awarded Tian Zhuangzhuang's "Blue Kite", which was very pleasing, because it was a banned film in China, and the Berlin and Venice Film Festivals awarded it successively, not only for the artistic affirmation, but also for the film. Support and cheer up Chinese dissidents. Such cultural support is very important.
Of course, I am willing to voice support for "Elite Violent Squad", but it is not an excellent film work. What I don't appreciate is that the actor provides too much background information when he first describes himself, which should be explained by the screenwriter with the plot and the director with the camera.

The real situation of the slums in Rio de Janeiro is best explained by the plot and photography. If it is explained by the hero's special police officers, not only is it not objective enough, but the description of the incident is not deep enough. The director actually chose to use the method of self-reporting by the hero, which is a bit cutting corners and taking shortcuts.

The film undoubtedly has a plot focus, which is about the life of a young man, who is in the middle of the special police and the underworld. However, the focus of this film is scattered, and all aspects are touched a little bit. When the boy appeared, it did not attract people's attention. Later, the voice-over in the film said that he cared about the boy, and we followed suit. However, the boy didn't actually have any drama before. That's the problem. There are multiple characters at the beginning of the story, and I'm a little bit at a loss. When the movie suddenly mentions the boy, I'm a little bit at a loss. Before that, I never knew that the boy would be the protagonist of the movie's climax. Theatrical handling is the soul of a work, so you can't be sloppy!

In terms of filming, I don't think the director Jose Padilha is great. It has been said that in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, the underworld maintains order there. However, the picture does not express it in this way. As for the situation that the soldiers and thieves are not divided, it is only explained by the narration, and the picture cannot express it. The choreographer's work is obviously not precise enough.

It is said that the shooting scene in this film is exciting, but I only saw the violent gunshots. As for the tension of the shooting in the narrow alley in the slum, I have not explained it at all. It seems like a shootout is a shootout, and it doesn't matter whether it happens in a ghetto or not. The picture cannot express the tension of the shootout in the narrow alleys in the slums. Did the director forget to explain it? The geography of the shootout is important because thousands of shootout films have already been shown, and this Brazilian film wants to tell the world what the situation in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro was like when the shootout happened.

Do the people there feel that the gun battles that take place every day are the same as setting off fireworks by the Hong Kong waterfront? we do not know.
Corruption and corruption of law enforcement officers, although they exist universally and are easily resonated by the world, they always have to spend space to describe them, and can’t just explain them with narration.

In the end, the film ends with a scene of violence and violence. The climax is actually not the excitement caused by a gunshot, but the development of the drama to the highest point, ending the culprit. However, I feel the former, not the latter. Watching the entire movie, everyone saw the difficulties in the police sweeping the underworld, and no doubt had the impression that there was no distinction between soldiers and thieves in Rio de Janeiro, and the slums were ruled by the underworld. However, that's not what the choreographer showed us in its entirety, it's just an impression that we summed up from a series of snippets they provided. (end)

  • Police oficer: [a popular saying about BOPE] "Dagger to the skull and nothing to the wallet."

  • Capitão Nascimento: Mr. 02, you'll never make it through this course, you know why? It's not because you are fucking weak and have no fiber. It's because you're a crooked cop, Mr. 02, and to wear this badge

    [taps the skull badge]

Capitão Nascimento: you gotta have character. You don't belong here, Mr. 02, you belong with the hookers and the pimps, Mr. 02. You belong with the abortion clinics. Crooked cops don't join BOPE, Mr. 02.
