Everyone is a loyal practitioner of his own theory

After watching the classic "Dangerous Method", except for Keira Knightley's chin, the image of the plot is not very deep, but after reading it, I have mixed feelings. Combined with the little gossips of psychologists I knew before, it can be summed up in one sentence: everyone is a loyal practitioner of his own theory.

Freud: A symbol of patriarchy. Gossip, Freud's parents are old and young (20 years apart!), his father is very tall and majestic, and his mother is young and beautiful. No wonder he has the idea of killing his father and marrying his mother, so the theory of sex has made him A place that is famous and criticized by later generations. In last semester's "Personality Psychology" class, everyone thought that the key words in Freud's life were "attack" and "becoming", but it was ironic that he rebelled against the patriarchy but became an authoritative image in the academic field! He didn't even think about it, since he believed in the Oedipus complex, wouldn't he, as a patriarchal figure, be resisted one day? In the film, Jung had a dream for Freud to explain, saying that on the border between Switzerland and Austria, there was an aging officer in royal uniform, and it was a ghost who had not yet found a suitable way to die. Freud, who felt at odds with Jung, said, "Isn't that person me?" In the later seminar, Freud finally fell, body and soul. Fromm said that Freud was very insecure in his heart, so he needed the dependence and obedience of others, which was manifested in the need for loyal subjects in his academic kingdom. Of course, people are always defeated by their own weaknesses.

Jung: Look forward. As my second favorite psychologist at the moment, what attracts me most about Jung is not his Hamlet work, but his particular mysticism. Gossip a little more, she's a goddamn talkative woman, and Jung said he wasn't predictable. When he was a child, the introverted Jung would still think about whether I would sit on a rock or if I would sit on a rock. This mysticism is a bit superstitious, but a little bit of follow your heart. Looking backward, everyone is the product of a cultural social family (the collective unconscious, the theory of sexuality), but looking forward, everyone can be individualized. Like his own full-fledged final break with Freud, ultimately a lonely individual.

Sabina: The Phoenix of Nirvana. Also haunted by Keira Knightley's Chin! Completely unfamiliar with this person. She said that the purest virtues are born from evil, and come out of the mud without being stained with wood! Later, the film said that she went to engage in child psychology, which is the scientific concept of development. After a bit of wiki, her famous thesis Destruction as the Cause of Coming Into Being, just by looking at the name, there is no breaking or standing, ashes to flame, there is no feeling of being reborn from the cocoon. Moreover, she infected Jung with her female intuition, which can be regarded as helping him to overcome obstacles on the academic road. I especially agree with her saying there's woman in every man, and a man in every woman, teaching us that we should be androgynous.

I think that everyone is a loyal practitioner of their own theories, so it is best to justify their own theories and not inflict too much pain on themselves.

PS: I don't know much about the metaphors of music and religion in the film, which affects my appreciation.

A Dangerous Method quotes

  • Carl Jung: I can only tell you that she's rather disorganized, emotionally generous, and exceptionally idealistic.

Sigmund Freud: Well, perhaps it's a Russian thing.

  • Sigmund Freud: I have simply opened a door. It's for the young men like yourself to walk through it. I'm sure you have many more doors to open for us. Of course, there's the added difficulty, more ammunition for our enemies, that all of us here in Vienna, in our psychoanalytical circle, are Jews.

Carl Jung: I don't see what difference that makes.

Sigmund Freud: That, if I may say so, is an exquisitely Protestant remark.
