Bergman's philosophy of life

The second Bergman work I watched in Fuquan Academy was also to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Bergman's death. After the film, everyone discussed a lot. I will talk about my own feelings first.

The 90-minute film is destined to omit a lot of details. The film does not narrate too much memory like some films, but the interweaving of dream/reality/past, with a certain fantasy. When the old man returned to the past for the first time, others could not see him; but the second time he went back to the past, his cousin took the initiative to question and talk to him. As the teacher said later, this method was used first by Bergman in the movie, and only he dared to use it.

There are many symbolic meanings in the film. For example, the young couple in the middle symbolizes the contradiction in the protagonist/daughter-in-law's own marriage; the nails on the door before the trial symbolize Jesus; the wild strawberries symbolize youth. The theme is also very clear, the old man's life review and reflection.

After that, the teacher and everyone also had a certain discussion and made some small summaries.

The role of the image of "watch" symbolizes the different characteristics of time in different ways. The watch without pointers in the film symbolizes the past time.

Interpretation of the dream, the dream of the carriage/coffin at the beginning has an excellent composition, which also symbolizes that the god of death is walking towards the old man; the judgment dream, the judgment of the old man's heart, the cold violence of the old man killed his wife, a kind of Nordic cruelty.

Later, it can be seen that the old man began to change after reflection, and the relationship between the characters gradually warmed up. The three young people are not only symmetrical with the old man's love triangle when he was young, but also a symbol of hope/youth; the relationship between the son and his wife gradually eases, and they go to dance together; the old man's attitude towards his servants gradually becomes gentle and so on.

The important thing is to change, and life also needs to be actively changed and acted; my son doesn’t want children because his family environment is not good, why don’t he think about it: I want to give my children a different family environment? ! ! !

In the end, the reason why the master is a master is that the characters created in just a few shots are extremely impressive: a funny and loyal servant, a serious and indifferent mother, three young people with different personalities...

The philosophy of life is all in the film!

Wild Strawberries quotes

  • Dr. Evald Borg: It's absurd to bring children into this world and think they'll be better off than we were.

Marianne Borg: That's just an excuse.

Dr. Evald Borg: Call it what you want. I was an unwanted child in a hellish marriage.

  • Marianne Borg: You're a coward.

Dr. Evald Borg: Yes. This life sickens me. I will not be forced to take on a responsibility that will make me live for one day longer than I want to. And you know that I mean what I say.
