In this play, Dr. Manhattan doesn't like his story, but writes his own. He is no longer a passive watch, but a choice, and he has actively chosen his own life.

Dr. Manhattan says he cannot change the future. Because the future is to him, as the past is to us, it has already happened. And the past cannot be changed for us.
In fact, the past can be "changed".
While we cannot change the reality of the past, the past in the underlying sense can. When something radically new emerges, it retroactively creates its own possibility, its own cause/condition. Falling in love has the power to change the past: in the past, as if I had always fallen in love with you, love seemed to be meant to be, the "answer to reality."
