Never thought that "Fences" was such a great movie!
This is the second work directed by Denzel Washington, the first being The Great Debater. I have seen almost every film he has acted in over the years, and I have almost decided that according to his personality and values, "Fences", like "The Debater", should be a film about black people fighting for equal rights.
But this judgment is completely wrong. Fences has no political narrative and does not fall into the rut of racial issues. It shows the complex inner world of a blue-collar man living at the bottom, and it doesn't matter whether the man is black or white or whatever.
This man's struggle in the predicament and helplessness of life, his disobedience in the face of death and doom, and his desire to bring endless harm to the people around him, have always firmly grasped the hearts of the audience. The bland bridges are always moving. This is an indescribable film, each character is very distinct, and the style of the film is restrained and not extravagant. The single scene and large monologue with a full sense of drama, under the interpretation of the excellent male and female protagonists and a group of supporting characters, release the power of the soul.
Denzel Washington, who was outstanding when he was young, is a man with a strong aura, and the role he portrays after middle age is more sophisticated, deep and fierce, but it is such a big man who made such a calm film as "Fences". And the delicate small format film is really surprising. Really hope this movie gets an Oscar next month.
