Silence--The Most In-Depth Religious History Film

"O Lord, why are you standing at a distance?" When you are in trouble, why are you hiding? "

Regarding religion, as an unbelieving celestial citizen, you don't actually have much power to express your opinion, but this movie is like a stick in your throat. I couldn't let it go. His words were not sharp, but they were like a blunted knife that was repeatedly twisted in the chest, depressing and heavy, and in the end, there was no happy ending.

In fact, there are not many movies about religion, but no director has ever discussed it so intently, which can shock atheists and make believers ponder deeply. Because we are already living in purgatory, death may be the only escape, so if there is no oppression, no tax, and no labor in the country, it will become a paradise for the poor, and therefore, Christ has become a sustenance for escaping from reality. Love and equality have become secondary. In the eyes of missionaries, this is not the true meaning of religion, but the faith advocated by the Lord actually has other and far greater aspirations. But the question is, who can define what is right and what is wrong with the difference in understanding between the two? This deep-seated problem, which even Jesus has not touched on, actually highlights the emptiness of religion.

On the night the missionaries landed in the Japanese village, the hungry people picked up the food and delivered it to their mouths, but the villagers who sat around for a long time, who had been hungry for a long time, started to pray before meals. These people have been forgotten by God even though their lives are suffering. Despite suffering, he has always remained faithful to the Lord. On the contrary, he has always received a good education. A missionary who considers himself the messenger of the Lord easily loses religious etiquette and commandments in the face of starvation. Because of their faith, every believer the missionary encounters suffers an inhuman misfortune. Except for prayers that are never answered, the missionary can only encourage believers to move forward bravely and assure them that death is the end of their suffering. After countless prayers, believers kept screaming in their ears, but the reward was always silence. This contradiction and depression torture the hearts of every believer and non-believer.

Extending beyond religion, the conflict between Jesus and Amaterasu is also a conflict between Eastern and Western cultures. Christianity, which has always appeared as a victim, seems to have the shadow of an aggressor this time. The Inquisition’s behavior is cruel, but Christianity wants to surrender. The stubborn goal of all pagan souls is also the focal point of conflict. As a single nation, Japan is a country with strong spiritual power. Today, 80% of the people still believe in Shintoism, which is enough to prove that coexistence is a better path than transformation.

Although the missionary finally carried the token of Christ to heaven, I believe that it was in his heart, from Portugal, that the old beliefs bound by the form of behavior had long since collapsed. The true God is actually everywhere. He will not selfishly try to suppress all souls with a book, a string of beads, and a wooden frame. All life is free. What the Lord wants believers to believe is actually us.

Produced by Martin Scorsese, a spiritual practice, filmed very well. I have watched the most in-depth religious history film that tortures the soul in history. I recommend it conservatively and do not collect it.

3.5. The scenes in Endo’s original work are highly restored, but overall they are still somewhat disappointing. In the second half (from the time Rodriguez was arrested), the rhythm was slow, and the constant torture scenes were unnecessary, and lacked the excavation of the martyr's motivation and the deep display of the social background. Secondly, the theme of truly being together with God by surrendering God on the surface is not expressed deeply enough. God’s silence is rich in meaning, but this film is relatively simple

Silence quotes

  • Dieter Albrecht: It was in the year 1641, during the first of my voyages to Japan, that I, Dieter Albrecht, came upon the most extraordinary story in these pages. As a physician in a great Dutch trading company, I traveled widely. But none of the wonders I have recounted in this journal has been so commented on as the curious matter of the apostate priests. I came closer than any European chronicler to the enigma of this country. And to learning of the lives of the lost priests. Inoue, the Inquisitor, would raid homes and search for any objects with hidden Christian images. The two priest were required examine these things and verify their use. I even, on occasion, observed them myself. The Dutch were the only Europeans allowed to trade in Japan. All ships were searched to warrant they were not smuggling religious objects. Nothing bearing the images of the cross, a saint, or rosary could pass. Despite every attempt a few things inevitably were smuggled in. And then it was as distressing to the Japanese as if blood had been spilled. When Sawano Chuãn died, the other priest assumed his duties and performed them with distinction. By this time, I observed he had acquired considerable skill with the language. And seemed to be at peace with his situation. Okada San'emon lived in Edo for the remaining years of his life. Some 10 years later, I was allowed to visit Edo. The Japanese gossiped freely about Okada San'emon. The Inquisitor Inoue, demanded repeated vows of apostasy from him. And they say "The fallen priest supplied them all quickly and vigorously." The Inquisitor continued to insist on periodic examinations of all suspected Christians. Okada San'emon was not exempt from this. Inoue was determined to never let his example be forgotten. Perhaps most particularly by the priest himself. In the year 1667, a religious image was discovered inside an amulet belonging to a servant called Kichijiro. The servant said he had won it gambling, had never looked inside, and could never have gotten the amulet from Okada San'emon since he was always under guard. The servant Kichijiro was taken away. After that, Okada San'emon himself was carefully watched. During my last voyage in 1682, I asked about him, and the Japanese were eager to reply. The last priest never acknowledged the Christian God. Not by word or symbol. He never spoke of Him and never prayed. Not even when he died. The business of his faith was long ended. Three guards stood watch over the coffin until it could be taken away, just to be certain. Only his wife was briefly allowed to view the body, and place there a humble mamorigatana to ward off evil spirits. There was no indication that she wept. The body was treated in the Buddhist manner. And he was given a posthumous Buddihist name. The man who was once Rodrigues ended as they wanted. And as I first saw him, lost to God. But as to that, indeed, only God can answer.

  • Ferreira: We were taught to love those who scorned us.

Father Sebastião Rodrigues: I feel nothing for them.

Ferreira: Only Our Lord can judge your heart.

    [pause]

Father Sebastião Rodrigues: You said, "Our Lord."

    [pause]

    Ferreira: I doubt it.
