This film brought back my memories of another film, the twilight years of a young and energetic old director. Even with its breath-taking cinematography, precise composition, and solid narrative, the film has its flaws. Long storyline, slightly out of rhythm editing, and last but not least, the actors' acting. This does not mean that Andrew's acting is not good, but in such a film that shows adherence to faith, to convince the audience, Andrew is a lot worse. Except for our protagonists, most of them have completed their missions in this film.
Indeed, some people will say that not all films have zero thresholds. Like Silence, we need to understand Christianity and appreciate each Christian's determination to believe in himself. But in today’s fragmented era, it’s a luxury just to make time to watch movies, how can we calm down and understand?
This is a movie that is out of tune with today's era, and only a director like Lao Ma dares to make it. Hell, it is even different from the mainstream movies. It has been stripped of the drama, and only relies on the delicate acting skills of the actors to make the story moving and convincing. Unfortunately, such actors are very few in Hollywood today.
