Unfortunately, Hannibal is not an ordinary murderer, Hannibal is Hannibal. He is a gentleman with good taste in music, food, wine, etc., a doctor who is proficient in psychology, medicine, and literature, and a devil with a very high IQ and a preference for the human brain. He's an on-screen classic, an insurmountable classic shaped by Anthony Hopkins. Young Gaspard Ulliel could use his grimness, beauty and deep dimple on the left side of his face to play a bloodthirsty tortured by hatred, but he could not convincely associate him with Hopkins Hannibal rubs together. Although he has done his best and done well enough, the script didn't give him more space, and the seniors didn't give him a chance to surpass.
Gong Li's performance and appearance in the film are 100 times better than in "Miami Vice". Her loose hair and soft nightgown are always full of the mystery and charm of oriental women. Although Gong Li added a lot to the film, she didn't have much room to play. If the character was a bit more "bad", maybe she would be better. "Mrs. Purple" is not like the propaganda said, she is the soul of the murderer. I think she is more like Hannibal's spiritual destination, taking care of him, helping him, and loving him. I thought she was a weird and evil woman, but in fact she was just a lonely woman.
Although, as an independent film, the script is decent, but as soon as it is linked to "Hannibal", it immediately fails. No matter how Hannibal's quirk of loving the human brain was formed, he didn't even show much of his high IQ, and he hardly mentioned his knowledge and taste. The means of torturing the enemy did not reflect Hannibal's shrewdness, elegance and cruelty at all, and there was no surprise. As a prequel to a classic work, it's really not decent.
It seems that what is tender is the script, what is rotten is the script, and it is the script that ruins the film. Hannibal fans who want to throw rotten chicken bombs at this movie, aim for the writers!
