In a small town in central Florida, seven-year-old Mary lives with her uncle, Frank, a boat repairer who does odd jobs from time to time. Mary is surrounded by many helpful and positive adult role models, including Frank's neighbor Roberta, and her teacher, Bonnie. Mary is also a math genius, with a one-in-a-million brain. Frank's mother, Evelyn, believed that Mary belonged to a special school more suitable for adults, but Frank wanted Mary to have a more conventional childhood - which he believed was to honor his sister - the last wish of Mary's mother. The dispute sparked a legal battle over Mary's future custody.
