Sarah (Kate Winslet) is an anthropologist who studies the behavior of typical suburban women, but she does enough research on her own. Although living a comfortable life, her husband Richard only knows how to masturbate to the PornStar on the computer all day long, completely ignoring the existence of Sarah and her daughter. Brad (Patrick Wilson) is a failed man. He relies on his wife to support himself. He graduated from law but failed to get a lawyer's certificate after 3 exams. When the two met, they were out of control. Finally came to the point of elopement.
Ronnie (Jack Earle Haley) is a pedophile who is ostracized right out of prison. Larry, a former cop, preaches the boycott of Ronnie every day.
I feel that although Sarah and Richard are not satisfied with their lives and are depressed every day, they are powerless or not determined to make a complete change. When Sarah saw her husband masturbating in front of the computer at home, but didn't ask about her life, she didn't ask for a divorce, didn't even make some threats, just slammed away. When Richard met Sarah, missed the bar exam for her behind his wife's back, and had sex with her, none of this made Rich think about divorce. Before the last two eloped, Sarah tasted the grief and madness of losing her daughter for a moment. Richard played the skateboard of his dreams and became a Sk8terboy once. After these two experiences, they both gave up the idea of running away and returned to their original life peacefully. Maybe they are all afraid of losing this kind of life that can't be achieved by their own strength without worrying about food and drink. There is a difference between reality and dreams.
Ronnie is a tragic figure I sympathize with. He was ostracized by the surrounding residents, and even if he wanted to swim in a public swimming pool, he was eventually taken away by the police. His mother is the only person who does not exclude him, and is his spiritual support. When her mother died of a heart attack due to Larry's constant harassment, it wouldn't come as a surprise that Ronnie acted like a madman. Like Ronnie said, (after being released from prison) I didn't hurt anyone, but I couldn't do some things that ordinary people can do. Ronnie's mother's love for her son is selfless, she protects her child, encourages him constantly, and even takes her own life. Before she died, she wrote to Ronnie "Be a good boy", which caused Ronnie to take extreme actions.
Larry is also a tragic figure who keeps harassing Ronnie because he accidentally killed a little boy. He suffered from mental illness. After killing Ronnie's mother, it crashed too. After the dream of being a police officer was shattered, life also went in another direction.
Kate Winslet won the Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for Best Actress for this film. I think the most exciting part of the film is the part where she cried while holding the daughter she found, which really touched me. Jack Earle Haley was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Ronnie, and the wonderful thing is that he broke out at home after his mother's death.
Overall, Littlechileren is good, but the plot is a little slow and a little long. Also, the music at the end is pretty good.
