Pacific Rim 2 has been criticized by some netizens for lacking a "heavy feeling". So what is the problem that caused the lack of "heavy feeling", I tried to analyze it.
Personally, I think the main reason is that the size of the mecha cannot be reflected in a limited space. Here we use ring 1 as the benchmark.
①The use of reference objects.
Pacific Rim 2 does use reference objects to reflect the size of the mecha. There are many scenes that are really well used. But there are also some scenes that destroy the "big" that was brought out with great difficulty. Here we first look at the reference of ring 1
However, to ring 2....
This ratio cannot understand the individual scenes in Ring 2. The mecha with a height of several hundred meters makes it feel similar to the size of the dinosaur team, missing the "bigness" of the mecha. (I'm not in the Black Dinosaurs, don't start fighting)
Secondly, I really like the night rain scene in Ring 1: You must know that Ring 1 caused the "Storm Crimson" and "Chenoa ♂fa" to receive the lunch boxes because of insufficient funds, but a large part of the special effects funds of Ring 1 were given. Rain at night, why not save the money to give the mecha some more scenes? This is not without reason:
Waterfall on the mech
The rain scene that burns money in ring 1
The waterfall formed by the gap of the mecha. The searchlight on the mecha gives the feeling of peeking at the leopard in the tube
The Ring 1 searchlight shines on the rack, giving people the feeling of "peeping the leopard in the tube", and the mecha at this time is more like a skyscraper illuminated by the searchlight.
Ring 1 alone is a gap in the mech that forms a waterfall in the rain. Just the adjustment movement of one component makes the water shock fly into the air for a few seconds (the water stays in the air for a few seconds, at least tens of meters high). This is the most shocking place for me.
Comparing with Ring 2 again, the mecha that lacks details can be seen in the sun, like an actor wearing a leather jacket (this is not to say that the special film is not good, the special film has its own unique charm, and I am also a special film. Filming fans, but You Ring 2, as a modern sci-fi special effects blockbuster, has the feeling of shooting a special film, which is disappointing.)
② Details about the mecha
Each of the mecha parts in Ring 1 is independent, they perform their own duties, and only move when they are needed. As if every part on the mech has its own life, these are the two highlights I like about the ring one:
The searchlight slowly rising above the Alpha toilet head, the four valves that move independently on the chest.
These four parts of the Dangerous Wanderer's rack pop up when the protagonist wonders if the leatherback is dead
Even the most advanced mecha, the 6 missiles are not uniform
The mecha in Ring 2 feels like a solid piece of iron. Except for the basic joints that move, the other parts of the mecha move too smoothly and uniformly. Basically, few of them can move alone, giving people the feeling They are all "dead", missing the soul of the mecha.
There is also whether the structure of the mecha is shown:
I really don't understand those complicated mechanical structures, but I noticed one detail, that is the sole of the mecha.
The soles of the ring 1 mecha's feet are full of steel nails, and the footsteps burst on all sides, which is simply the enemy of road administration.
The sole of the ring 2 mecha is as flat as it has been polished for 800 years, and the ground is intact
The ground where the ring 1 mecha stepped on burst.
Ring 2's mecha stepped on the ground, the ground was intact, and it felt like a doll model filled with helium.
I won't list the other details, but from these points, you can see the difference between the two movies.
③ Real details such as battle damage
Battle damage in Ring 1 is undoubtedly one of our favorite features
Battle damage in ring 1, from the combat uniform to the cab, with paint peeling everywhere
New but plastic combat suit and cab
Ring 2's brand new plastic interior kit is as different from Ring 1's battle damage as a kid's toy gun is from a battle-hardened real gun.
Is this toy gun similar to Ring 2? 23333333
There is also damage to the mecha, we find a scene that is as similar as possible:
Brave Omega's Head
The moment the head of the "Omega Brave" in Ring 2 was pulled off, I instantly thought of the feeling of pulling the head of my toy model when I was a child - no parts fell off, and it was clean and crisp. The cockpit with such a big and heavy head fell to the ground without being smashed, and even bounced a few times... Are you sure this is not a plastic head made of a figure, but a mecha cockpit? I always feel that there is a hand-made spherical joint hidden behind the head of "Omega" in this picture 233333
look at ring 1
Damaged head in ring 1
The mecha in ring 1 was crushed by the tail of the tail rat. Hard metal twists, shattered parts shoot out.
Of course, the head in ring 2 is pulled out, and the head in ring 1 is crushed. The ratio between the two is really unfair, but how to choose is your director's business, how to destroy the head to reflect the unique sense of war damage of the mecha is also the director's choice. Obviously, the director of Ring 2 did not reflect in this scene. Coming out of the battle damage that the mecha should have.
Even if the head and limbs of the mecha are broken, we will go to Ring 1 to find similar shots
Mecha limbs broken in ring 1
Compared with the head of the "Brave Omega" in Ring 2, when the right hand of the "Dangerous Wanderer" was removed in Ring 1, the parts were scattered, the hydraulic oil and engine oil spurted, and the wires were pulled out. This is not a mecha, what is this? ! ! !
Here's a supplement... Through the hand speed of UP's many years of practice, I found that there were indeed some details when the head of "Omega Brave" in Ring 2 was removed, but this was only discovered after I paused n times to watch it.... ..
The setting is for the movie, we mecha fans are not the happier we see the more advanced and better the mecha. If you talk about the setting, it is impossible to have battle damage inside a cockpit (where is the battle damage in the cockpit of your mech fighting), and the paint is off, why not spend a few pieces to buy a paint pipe to replenish the paint On, how poor is your PPDC? ? ?
But we all know that few people struggle with these settings. Instead, most of us like the setting of battle damage in Ring 1.
Finally, I think, some people say that the mecha is lighter and faster, the details are less, and there is no battle damage. This is because there have been no monsters in the past few years, technology has developed, mecha equipment has been updated, the speed has become faster, and the degree of integration is high. After all, the setting still has to serve the movie. We don't just want to see higher and faster armor. We also feel that Eureka Raider is very mecha "fan". But we don't like mechas that don't have a "heavy feel", even if it's reasonable in the settings....
If I shoot Ring 3, I personally don't like watching a lot of advanced mechs kill the pioneer's house. I'd like to see the Pacific Rim prequels, Horizon Warriors, Tango Wolf, Invisible Ronin, Orland Romeo's battle
The last sentence sums it up:
I want to see the most mecha
(Ring 2 also barely qualified as a sci-fi film, but as a sequel to Pacific Rim, I don't think it qualified)
