The host
The director chooses the locations such as the drainage, under the bridge.

The touching part: two teenagers have the companion with each other and seek food in the left-behind grocery stores. The senior tells the junior not to steal the money. They are only borrowing things.

The imagination of the missed girl appearing in their grocery store is really creative. They didn't say any single words, the missing girl just shows up there.

And he likes to have young people to maintain the hope.

Dialogue can have the interactive side. It can be a rhetorical question.

Comedy: Usually family conflicts' scene includes loud argument or physical fight, but in HOST, when the father was criticizing how other two treated the eldest badly, all the three of his sons and daughter actually fall asleep. So essentially the father is communicating with audience. That is a moment of building relationship with audience in cinema. And also it is reverse of the usual conflict scene.

The masterful directing on slow motion:
Slow motion: The father stares at the son when the moment of danger(monster fish) is right in front of them. Father signs to him to go back to the vehicle.
Then the monster fish takes the father !!!!
Slow motion again: the three children have the facial expression of being shocked and fear. But there is no sound of their shouting.

Slow motion is so well used here. It helps audience pause on the right beat to sense the danger and then the characters' reaction to the tragedy. We see the horror on the faces instead of the horror itself.

The young brother has the little arch . He is a colleague graduate student but can't find decent jobs. In the emergency moment, he uses his knowledge to find the missing girl's location through a tele-communication company.

Moving element: The older son is caught in the hospital. Her sister calls him that she already found his missing daughter's location. And meanwhile, he is forced to take a shot by his doctors. He rebels, but not against the shot since he is a clueless character who doesn't know what exactly the government is doing, instead, against being delayed to rescue his daughter. For him, the fight point is for the daughter, not himself. That is touching.

The climax: a complex of slow motion, families actions to kill the monster

The ending: the Slap on government propaganda.

The ending is particularly chilling, very, very worthy of a high-score movie

The homeless who appeared mysteriously, the incendiary bombs and rockets of youth, are too romantic. No matter how pessimistic, look at their history, all struggles will not be in vain, and all sacrifices will be remembered. While watching it, what came to mind the most was not the local incident, but the 1992 Los Angeles defense. Whether it's a spectacle of a genre, or a sarcastic humor, it's all just skin, and bravery is the base color. At every fork in the trail, they took the exact opposite path from ours. It's not that we are bloodless, it's just not enough. A little more, a little more, will history be completely different?

The Host quotes

  • Park Gang-Du: [Strapped to an operating table, his head encased in a strange looking protractor-like contraption with a needle attached to it] You're talking about a virus that doesn't exist. Mister, they said there's no virus. So, you should let me go now.

    [He starts to sob]

Park Gang-Du: My daughter Hyun-seo is under Wonhyo bridge.

    [Panicked]

Park Gang-Du: I need to go quickly. Please let me go. Okay, mister, huh?

    [Suddenly, angrily]

Park Gang-Du: You shitheads! You bastards!

    [Panicking desperately again]

Park Gang-Du: Please, mister, I beg you, let me go. I'll give you my food stand, okay? I'll give the rights to you.

[One of the doctors begins drawing a pencil mark on either side of Gang-du's forehead]

Park Gang-Du: What are you doing? Please, mister! Wait!

    [We hear drilling, and Gang-du half-cries, half-quavers]

Park Gang-Du: Fuck! This is driving me crazy! I really need to get to Hyun-seo!

    [He hyperventilates]

Park Gang-Du: Mister! Please, save me! What is this? Please!

[as the needles edge further to his head, Gang-du sobs hysterically]

    Park Gang-Du: Hyun-seo, I'm sorry. Daddy...

  • Park Hie-bong: I received a complaint from Mat Number 4. Their squid had only nine legs. Did you eat one?

    Park Gang-Du: No.

Park Hie-bong: Don't deny it. Why touch other people's things? Think of it from the customer's perspective. A squid. The torso tastes delicious, but the legs, especially the longest one, has something special, right?

[He pulls a half eaten squid leg out of the pocket of Gang-du's hoodie]

Park Hie-bong: [Thrusting a tray into his son's arms] Take this to Mat Number 4. Tell them it's on the house.
