Gone Glory~~

"The Banner of the Fathers" - In my opinion, it is not a pure war film, but more like a satire or a satire. During the Battle of Iwo Jima, the second national flag raised by six soldiers was photographed by war reporters and sent back to China. These six soldiers were regarded as heroes and sparked a national adoration, which was used by the financially-strapped US government to agitate the masses. Buy war bonds to fundraise. Three of the survivors were called back on a domestic fundraising tour, but one of the dead soldiers was mistaken, and the army demanded a cover-up for the fundraising to go smoothly. With this mistake, they embarked on a series of activities with guilt, disputes and compromises, to piece together the complete recollection of the war and the truth of the photo in their respective memories. They don't think they are heroes, the real heroes stay on the island, but people just greet the glory in front of them with flowers and applause, but always forget the real heroes who died in those wars, which makes the three of them Feeling heavy pressure and conscience. It was indeed a Hollywood-style farce, with huge crowds and exaggerated performances, a dramatic fundraising stage that turned three soldiers into three stars, and was sought after everywhere. However, the post-war experience of the three former star heroes at the end of the film is so different from the pre-war experience, the flowers and halo are so short-lived, people in peace after the war quickly forget the existence of these heroes. Through the pursuit of his father's experience by one of the soldier's sons, the director brings together the experiences of the parties after the war. One cannot find a job and become a gatekeeper for the rest of his life; the other is destitute and died young; It's a hero's thing until old age. The lives of some other unsung heroes are also turbulent and difficult. It is truly embarrassing that these soldiers who dedicate their youth to the army and the country have lived such a bleak life after being discharged from the army. Watching this film was far from my original expectations. One of the reasons I liked watching war films was the bloody and fearless spirit of the soldiers in the brutal war. But this film is different from traditional war films. The director tells the story behind the fighting heroes, which allows me to understand war and heroes from another perspective. There is no passion full of blood, but there is more deep thinking, just like a sentence in the film: Heroes are created by us, we need heroes. Maybe this is what the director wants to express? Whether it is a hero or a star or even a god, they are actually created by people to satisfy their own selfishness or to gain some kind of benefit, and they are still ordinary people after all. Born in response to people's needs, and then ruthlessly left behind. The peaceful and prosperous world we live in now is achieved by the sacrifice of our ancestors. We can't be so ruthless and forget our roots. This may be the true meaning of the director's expression. Just like the title of the film, we are sheltered by the "flag of our fathers". Be grateful for everything you enjoy, and don't let the blood of heroes go in vain...

Flags of Our Fathers quotes

  • Belle Block: Oh my Lord, that's Harlon!

    Belle's Young Son: Where?

Belle Block: Right there. Planting that flag, that's your brother.

Belle's Young Son: Ma, all you can see is his behind.

Belle Block: And that's his. I powdered and diapered it, I know my son. That's him. Go get your father.

Belle's Young Son: Daddy, Ma's got a picture of Harlon's keister in the paper!

  • Captain Severance: Look, I've had to make a few other changes. I'm promoting you, to platoon sergeant.

Mike Strank: Thank you, sir. I appreciate it.

    Captain Severance: You bet.

Mike Strank: The trouble is, I already told my men I'd see them through this.

Captain Severance: That your James Cagney impersonation? 'Cause I've heard better.

Mike Strank: Well, I'll keep practicing, then.

Captain Severance: Look, this isn't your first time through this. You don't need to prove anything.

    Mike Strank: No, sir.

Captain Severance: You're not the *best* sergeant I've ever had, just the best one that's still walking. Block's a good man.

Mike Strank: Yes, sir, he is.

Captain Severance: The men know him, he can step right in. You know, I have actually thought this through. Platoon sergeant puts you further away from the bullets.

Mike Strank: I already gave them my word, sir. I told them I'd bring them all home to their mothers, which means I already lied to half of them. Can't lie to the rest.
