In the 1930s, Australia had just gained independence from the British colonists. The remote Northern Wilderness was still rough and deficient, with a strict social hierarchy. Aboriginal blacks could not enter white bars, and their public contacts were also despised by good people in society. The mixed-race little Nora is called a "mixed-colored person". She does not belong to the indigenous black group, nor is it white The shelter received "assimilation education" and was separated from the poor mother.

'The territory' was a land of crocodiles, cattle barons, and warrior chiefs where adventure and romance was a way of life. It was also a place where aboriginal children of mixed race were taken by force from their families and trained for service in white society. These children became know as the stolen generations.
