1. The interior, the apartment, and the
entrance hall are all messed up. The window facing the patio was open.
The apartment door was suddenly knocked open. A plainclothes agent, two policemen in uniform, and a few firefighters—also in overalls—come in and look around. They all wear gloves and face masks that cover their noses and mouths. Behind them, the porter and his wife also squeezed into the hall. They all covered their noses. The other hand of the porter was holding a stack of letters and promotional bills. Behind them, a female neighbor followed.
Plainclothes agent (to the porter and neighbor): Please wait outside.
He motioned to a policeman who was busy asking curious bystanders out.
Police (to the porter, pointing to the stack of letters): When is the most recent one?
Concierge (checking the letter): The most recent one seems to be number 16...Wait a minute...The
plainclothes agent tried to open the door on the left, but it was in vain. The door was sealed with tape.
Plainclothes agent (to the firefighter): Would you like to try it?
While the firemen fiddled with the door, plainclothes agents entered the dining room next to the bedroom. He quickly opened the window, turned around, and wanted to go through the opposite door into the room on the left. The two doors were also locked, and the seams of the doors were taped. He turned right into the living room and opened the window.
Fireman (voice-over): The door opened.
The plainclothes detective returned to the hall and passed by the firefighters who were waiting there. Once again we heard a few words from the police and the porter.
Concierge: ... as far as I know, no. They have always hired a nurse, but I haven't seen her in a long time. My wife... the
plainclothes agent walked into the bedroom where the door was now opened. The windows were wide open, and the wind blew the curtains inward.
Plainclothes agent (the firefighters who couldn't restrain their curiosity, sneaked into the bedroom and stood by the door): Is it the window you opened?
The firemen shook their heads.
The plainclothes agent turned and looked at the large double bed, which was placed against the back wall of the bedroom. On the right side of the bed, there is only a bare mattress. On the left side lies the partially decomposed body of an old woman. Where there used to be eyes, now there are only two cavities left. The corpse was neatly dressed and decorated with flowers, which had already withered. There is a cross on her chest.
2. White letters on a black background: credits.
3. Interior view, concert hall, at night
we saw audiences pouring into the concert hall. George and Annie, who were old, were also among the crowd. They walked to the front seat. Everyone was seated, and we heard the usual announcement, asking the audience to turn off their mobile phones. Some people discovered that their mobile phones were still on and turned them off quickly. The lights went out. applause.
Outside the painting, we heard the performer come on stage. The sound of clearing his throat came from far or near from the auditorium. Finally, the music rang.
4. The interior
scene , the artist's dressing room, and the music in the night scene continues. Fans crowded around the performer and congratulated him.
George and Annie squeezed into the room. (If the performer is a female, they will be holding flowers, just like most other people.) The
performer caught a glimpse of them, dropped the group of fans, walked over and greeted them warmly, obviously happy to hear them.
5. Interior view, bus, Ye
George and Annie sit side by side in the mid-empty carriage. Annie talked happily, while George interjected a few words and smiled from time to time. They are relaxed and happy.
6. Interior view, the entrance hall of the apartment, the night
door lock turns, and the apartment door opens from the outside. The music ends.
George came in and turned on the light. He and Annie checked the opened door. Around the door lock, traces of attempts to forcibly pick the lock can be seen.
George leaned down and stroked the groove with his fingers.
George: They use something like a screwdriver... It doesn't look very professional...
Annie: But who would do such a thing?
George: I don't know. Why do people break in? It's because they want to steal things.
Annie: Stealing us?
George (laughs short and loudly): Hi, why not? Think about it carefully, among the people we know, there are three or four who have been attacked by thieves.
He checked the outside of the other door again, then entered the room and closed the door with his backhand.
Annie: What time is it? Can you give the porter a call?
George: I'll call again tomorrow morning. They can't see anything anyway.
He unbuttoned his coat and walked to the closet in the hall.
George: Don't let this spoil your good mood.
Annie: Either look for the police?
George: Okay, give me your coat.
She walked up to him, he took off her coat and hung it in the closet with his.
Annie: Think about it. If we are at home, in bed, someone breaks in...
George: Why should I think about this?
Annie: But this is terrible! I think I will be scared to death.
George (laughs): I will too.
He took off his shoes.
George: How about a drink?
Annie: I'm tired.
George: I still want to have a drink.
He put the shoes next to the other shoes and put on slippers. Annie went into the bathroom.
Annie (Voiceover): Then drink it. Matilde told me that in the building where she lived, the top floor apartment was stolen by a few thieves who came in from the attic. They made a hole in the wall, cut the precious picture from the frame, and swept away, leaving no trace.
He walked to the kitchen.
George: They must be professional thieves.
When he walked to the bathroom door, he stopped, as if looking at Annie.
George: Have I told you that you are beautiful tonight?
After a short pause, then ---
Annie (voice-over; obviously his compliment makes her very useful): Why do you think of saying this?
George smiled softly and disappeared into the kitchen. light is on. We heard him tossing in the kitchen, apparently finding a glass and pouring some wine. After a while -
Annie: Are the sixteenth notes in the fast board unbelievable? What a great staccato! Do not you think so?
Pause.
George (voice-over): You are very proud of him, eh?
7. Interior view, bedroom, night
George wakes up. He glanced to his side, a little surprised, and raised his head. Annie sat upright with her back against the headboard.
George: What happened?
Annie: It's okay.
After a while, the bell of the egg timer in the kitchen ushered us into the next scene.
8. Interior view, kitchen,
the egg timer in the kitchen is dinged.
George was sitting at a table in front of the window. The table was half cleared and breakfast was placed. He held the phone to his ear, and opened a telephone book in front of him. Annie got up from the table, walked to the stove, turned off the gas, took the eggs out of the pan with a long spoon, and rinsed them with cold water. Like George, she also wore a nightgown.
George (to the phone): How about next week? No, but it’s better to fix it as soon as possible. So as not to make people think about it. Moreover, it's too ugly, it's just unsightly...Wednesday? What time is it? Okay...Can you bring the paint too? Apply a coat on it...but at least a primer...yes, good. thanks.
He hung up the phone.
George (to Annie): This person can still count on it.
Annie (back to the table with the egg): I hope so. Do you remember, the last time he made us wait long enough.
George (admitting with a smile): Yes, that's right. (She puts the egg in his egg cup) Thank you. If we call the dedicated repairman, we have to wait two months.
Annie (as if talking to herself): Really?
She took a seat. Look straight ahead. He cracked the eggs, sprinkled them with salt, and began to eat breakfast.
George: That time, Frodon’s toilet was blocked. They waited for three full days. It's really annoying.
He eats eggs. I want to add more salt, but the salt shaker is empty.
George: The salt shaker is empty.
He glanced at her, as if waiting for her to add salt. She didn't respond. He realized that his expectations were inappropriate, so he got up and walked to the cupboard in the kitchen to fill up the salt shaker.
George: I don't know if he plans to give us CDs. Maybe he won't come at all. He didn't mention it anyway. I want to buy one. The performance is really good, I don't want to wait too long. We will go to Viking to buy it this afternoon. What do you say?
He returned to the table and sat down again.
George: Huh? Annie? what happened to you?
She stared at him without making a sound.
George: What do you think? What happened to you?
He waved his hand before her eyes and smiled nervously.
George: Hey————! ! ! Cuckoo ———! ! ! I am here.
She looked at him stupidly.
George (worried): Annie, what do you think?
He stared at her, waiting. no response. He got up gently, walked around the table, and sat next to her. I want to draw her gaze to myself.
George: Annie, what's the matter?
He half-turned her upper body and let her face him, but she seemed to treat him as transparent.
George: Annie...what...
he took her face with both hands and looked straight at her.
George: Annie...
She stared at the void. His hands fell. Sitting beside her for a long time.
silence.
Eventually he got up and walked to the sink, turned on the faucet, dampened a tea towel, wringed it dry, and came back and put the tea towel on Annie's face. Waiting for her response. However, there is no response. He then picked up the hair from the back of her neck and put a tea towel on the back of her neck. Then he sat down and looked at her, his eyes full of pleading.
George (almost crying): Annie... honey... please!
The two of them sat still again. We heard the sound of flowing water in the background. In panic, he forgot to turn off the tap.
He suddenly made a decision, stood up, walked quickly through the hallway into the bedroom, and began to put on clothes in a hurry, and it took a lot of effort to put on the clothes. Suddenly, the buzzing of the faucet stopped. The sound of water could have been transmitted to the bedroom.
George's reaction was slow. After a moment, he stopped abruptly.
George: Annie?
Finally he turned around and walked back to the kitchen. His clothes are not ready yet.
Annie sat in her original position and looked at him.
Annie: What are you doing?
She turned to face breakfast.
Annie: You didn't turn off the faucet.
George stared at her blankly.
George (startled and angry): Hi, what's going on? Are you crazy? Do you want to have fun? If it's not for fun, what's going on?
She looked back in amazement.
Annie: What did you say?
George (positive color): Is this a joke? Are you intentional?
Annie: What's a joke? I do not understand! Why are you speaking to me so sternly? What happened to you?
George walked from the door to the table.
George: Annie! I beg you! Stop fooling me. This joke is not fun at all.
Annie (annoyed): What's a joke in the point of Christ? What happened? !
George had intended to sneer, but he began to suspect that he had blamed Annie. He tried to suppress his anger, pulled the chair that had been standing beside Annie, sat down, and looked at his wife. She is inexplicable.
George: What happened? Why didn't you respond just now?
Annie: No reaction to what?
George: Right? To me, to everything.
Annie: When?
George: Just now. A moment ago.
Annie: Please tell me what went wrong. How should I react just now?
George looked away sadly at first, then moved back to Annie's face. He didn't want to believe it was true.
George: I don't know how to say it. Do you really have no idea what happened just now?
Annie: But what happened just now?
George (can hardly face her when speaking): You are sitting here, staring at me. I asked you what's wrong, but you didn't answer.
He picked up a wet tea towel from the table.
George: I put this tea towel on your face and you have no response.
Annie looked at the tea towel, then at George, and then shook her head. She was a little flustered if she couldn't understand what was going on. George stared at her. Saw the water stain on the collar of her nightgown.
George: Look... your collar is still wet.
Annie pulled her collar down and saw the wet marks. She gradually realized that something was wrong.
Annie: When was... when was that?
George: Just now, a few minutes ago.
Annie: So...?
George: There is no "so". I go to the bedroom to get dressed. I want to find someone to help.
Annie: Looking for someone to help?
George: Yes, then you turned off the tap.
Annie: Yes, because you are open.
silence.
Annie: I don't understand.
George: I don't understand either.
pause.
George: Don’t you think I’d better call Dr. Bertier?
Annie: Why? What can he do?
George: I'm not good. I'll check it for you.
Annie: I'm fine. I have nothing.
George: Annie, please! This is ridiculous. We cannot pretend that nothing happened.
Annie: But what happened?
pause.
Annie: I am here. I am eating breakfast. What you said, I can't figure it out at all.
George: Can you explain how the tea towel got to you?
Annie (annoyed): No, no!
George: Who turned on the faucet?
Annie: It's you!
George: Do you really remember?
Annie (increasingly desperate, tears welling up): No, I don't remember! Are you torturing me deliberately? Stop bothering me!
George stared at her.
George: Don’t you think it’s best to invite Dr. Bertier?
Annie: No!
She picked up the teacup and drank it in one fell swoop, as if to prove that she was all well. When she wanted to add water to the teacup, her hands were not at her disposal, and she couldn't correct the mouth of the cup. She noticed this, put down the cup, tears burst into her eyes.
9. Interior view, apartment, the night
sky is silent.
Wide-angle lens of the apartment. hall. bedroom. living room. Dinning room. kitchen. Can't see people.
10. Interior view, living room,
Ava, who is 50 years old, came to visit them. Annie is not at home.
Ava: You know his temper. Once he has an idea in his mind, it has to be carried through to the end. In the end, everyone was very happy. Moreover, it will not harm our financial situation. Our performance will last until the 28th. Then we have ten days of rest, then we go to Stockholm for four days, and then we go to Kumo, Finland. God knows where it is. In the North Pole. But Jeff has been there, been there several times, and he likes it there. We are going to play "Dowland Adaptation" there, and then return to London.
George: What about the children?
Ava: Liz is in boarding school and John has lived independently. He is 26 years old.
George: What is he doing?
Ava: Still in school. We don't meet much. He has his own idea. Just like Jeff. They can't get along. Jeff wanted to give him a suggestion no matter what, and John didn't like it at all.
George: How is he?
Ava: I think it's good. He is less impulsive. Still working hard.
George: It doesn't sound like a compliment.
Ava: No! He is not like Jeff. Quiet, but stubborn. I think he will follow the rules. At the last concert held at the Conservatory, he played the solo part of Haydn's Concerto. very nice. Jeff was also there, and finally congratulated him.
Pause.
George: How about you?
Ava: What do you mean?
George: Have you two settled together?
Ava (chuckling softly): God, you know him, don't you? Last winter, he suddenly discovered that he was fascinated by a viola player who had been in our orchestra for several years. What shall I say? The whole is a melodrama, and the poor little lover is struggling and clamoring to commit suicide. He was frightened, regretful, and returned to me. I am used to this kind of thing now. What is a bit embarrassing is that in that orchestra, you have nothing to hide.
George: Do you love him?
Ava: Yes, I think I love him.
Pause.
Ava: What is aphasia?
George said that this issue is very complicated.
George: What can I say? The carotid artery is blocked. They did an ultrasound scan, in fact, they did two, and they said they would operate on her. She was frightened. Perplexed. You know she has always been afraid of doctors. They said that the risk of surgery is very low, and if there is no surgery, she will definitely have a serious stroke.
Ava: What do they say now?
George: The situation is not good. It is five percent of the failures of the operation.
He yawned.
George: It's so sad.
He glanced at his watch.
George: I usually take a nap at this time. My blood sugar is too low.
pause.
Ava: I am sad.
George: Yes.
pause.
Ava: What can I do for you?
George: Nothing can help. Your own troubles are enough, and it's great that you still want to see me.
Pause.
She didn't know what to say.
George: I'm telling the truth. You can't help. After she returns home, we will see how the situation is. We will try our best to deal with it. Maybe I will hire a caregiver, or find a way to deal with it myself. decide as things go. We have been weather-beaten in our life, your mother and me. (Chuckles) This is a new question.
pause.
Ava (chuckles): That's ridiculous. I don't know whether to say it or not. Maybe you will feel embarrassed. But when I walked in just now, I suddenly remembered that when I was a child, I often eavesdropped on you two having sex. At that time, it was a comfort to me. Can give me a feeling that you love each other and we will always be together.
11. Interior view, bedroom.
A carpenter and his assistant raised the mattress of the double bed. George watched.
12. Interior view, entrance hall/living room, and the
apartment door opens on the day. George comes in. Then came Annie in a wheelchair, pushed by a paramedic. The second paramedic (as young as the first) followed with a suitcase and a large bag. Behind them is the porter.
George wanted to get rid of these three outsiders as soon as possible. He stuffed a twenty-euro bill into the hand of the first paramedic.
George: Yes. thank you very much. This is for both of you. Just put things down. There, by the window, yes. We have no problem by ourselves. Thanks a lot.
The two paramedics exchanged glances, thanked them, and walked past the concierge and left the apartment.
George (to the porter): Thank you, Mr. Merrie.
Concierge: If you have any needs, just call downstairs. If we can help...
George: So far everything is fine. If we have any needs, we will tell your wife.
Concierge (to Annie): We are glad you are back, Mrs. Laurent.
Annie: Yes. Thank you, Mr. Merrie. Thank you.
The porter hesitated for a moment.
Annie: Yes, thank you.
Concierge: Ok... then... then bye bye, ma'am. Say it again, welcome home. Goodbye, sir.
George: Goodbye, Mr. Merrie.
Concierge: Goodbye.
He went out.
George was at a loss for a moment. Then he said---
George (smiling nervously): Where do you want to go...
Annie: Living room.
George pushed her towards the living room. He bypassed the wheelchair, opened the door, returned to the wheelchair, and pushed Annie into the living room.
The door frame is a bit narrow. The wheelchair can barely pass through it. George pushed Anne to the sofa and armchair, then walked around in front of her.
George: Shall I make some tea?
Annie (smiling faintly): Come sit with me for a while first.
George noticed her expression. He knew his actions were awkward. He sat in an armchair.
Annie: Can you help me sit on a chair?
George stood up again.
George (busy): Of course.
He stretched out his hand. She braked the brake of the wheelchair, raised the pedal with her left foot, moved her right leg from the pedal to the ground with her left hand, and then stretched her left arm toward George.
Annie: You'd better put my arm on your shoulder, and then put your right arm on my shoulder, so that you can save a little effort.
He obeyed and helped her up, and the two of them staggered a few short steps to the other armchair. He carefully put her down and helped her sit upright. Because of their unskilled movements, the whole process seemed clumsy.
Annie: Thank you.
He smiled because it would be too silly to answer "you're welcome". Then he sat across from her.
Look at each other speechlessly.
At first they were very uncomfortable, but they immediately accepted the reality: the topic cannot be called upon. During this period, all we heard was the intermittent sound of vehicles coming downstairs. After a while -
George (softly; almost talking to himself): I'm glad you are back.
Annie (also whispering): Me too.
Pause again. Then, Annie said ---
Annie: Promise me one thing.
George: What's the matter?
Annie: Please don't send me back to the hospital.
George: What?
pause.
She stared at him. He got it.
Annie: You agree?
George: Annie...
Annie: You agree?
pause.
George: Annie, I...
Annie: Don't talk now. Don't preach to me. Please.
Pause.
George: All I can say is...
Annie (interrupting him): Don't say anything. Just don't say anything. Okay? !
pause.
13. Interior view, bedroom, at night,
he helped her to bed, and then covered her with a blanket.
George: Yes.
Annie: Thank you. Thanks, dear.
George: Everything is normal?
Annie (smiling): Very good.
He hesitated.
Annie: You don't need to hold my hand all the time. I can take care of myself, you know.
He nodded.
Annie: Don't feel guilty. It makes no sense. And it's annoying. It's the same for me.
George: I have no guilt.
Annie: That's good.
She smiled.
Annie: Now, go. I am not disabled. You can leave me alone for a few minutes. I won't fall apart.
George (with a soft smile): Okay.
Annie: Did you buy the new biography of Hanoncourt?
George: I have read it.
Annie: Huh?
George: Do you want to see it? I'll get it for you.
Annie: Of course.
He went out of the room to fetch the book. She was still lying there, waiting, combing her hair with her healthy left hand, trying to make herself look more beautiful, and then flattening the blanket that was a bit slippery. After a while, we heard George yelling.
George (Voiceover): I don't remember where I put the book.
Annie: It's okay. It's not a matter of importance.
George (voice-over): No, it does matter. Wait, maybe it's... wait a minute! Look! here! I have a bad memory!
She smiled and looked in his direction. He came in with a book.
George: I thought I had put the book in another room, but I actually put it away. An organized person can never change the habit of keeping order.
Annie (received the book): Thank you.
She put the book on her belly. Look at George.
Annie: Now, let's do your business. Don't wait to see how I hold the book in my hand, okay?
George: Okay.
He stared at her for a moment, then left the bedroom. She waited until he went out. Try to relax. Then she remembered the book. She touched the book with her left hand and tried to open it. This is no easy task for her.
Then she found out that she had forgotten to wear glasses. She put the book on the bed cover again, and reached out to fumble on the bedside table. Finally found the glasses. Open the book again and try to read.
14. Interior view, kitchen, and
the wife of the day concierge put the supermarket shopping bags full of dangdang on the operating table. Take down the stack of mail she had placed at the top of the bag and put it next to the bag. Then take out the invoice and retrieve the money.
Concierge's wife: It's a pity that the strawberries have become moldy. Tomorrow I will go to the market to buy you some fresh ones. My husband will bring you bottled water this afternoon. I can't take heavy things, my back, you know...
George: Oh, it's okay.
Concierge’s wife: The total is seventy-six euros and forty cents. That is the invoice, this is the recovered change, 23 euros and 60 cents.
George: Thank you very much. Keep the change, please. thanks.
Concierge’s wife: Thank you, sir.
Can't find words for a while. An awkward pause.
Concierge’s wife: Oh, I’m leaving. If you need anything else, call me.
George: Okay, I will.
Concierge's wife: How is your wife?
George: Oh, she is fine. Is recovering.
Concierge’s wife: That’s nice. Say hello to her for me. My husband and I are very happy that she is back.
George: Yes, so do we. Goodbye, Mrs. Merrie. thank you very much.
Concierge’s wife: Goodbye, sir.
She walked to the door of the apartment, and faced George again.
Concierge’s wife: I will bring you strawberries around noon tomorrow. Is this time convenient for you?
He nodded. She closed the door when she left.
15. Interior view, entrance hall/bathroom,
he waited in front of the closed door of the bathroom. After a while, we heard the sound of flushing. After a while, we heard ---
Annie (voice-over): Hello, can you come in for a while?
He opened the bathroom door, walked around Annie, helped her up, she wrapped his left arm around his neck, keeping this position, he lifted the shorts in her skirt. Then they slowly staggered out of the bathroom, and he helped her back into the wheelchair.
16. Interior view, bedroom,
they lie in bed at night . Annie was already asleep, breathing heavily. George opened his eyes and listened to her breathing with concern.
17. Interior view, kitchen,
sunlight coming in. George cooked some simple meals. They are in a good mood and talk while eating.
George: ...the old-fashioned romance, it's about a nobleman and a girl from a commoner background. They couldn't get married, so they decided to abandon their love--in fact, I don't remember clearly. Anyway, I was moved to a complete mess, and it took some time to relax. In the courtyard of the house where my grandmother lived, a young guy asked me at the window where I was going. He is a few years older than me, and he likes to brag, I am very impressed with him. "Go to the movies." I replied proudly, because my grandmother gave me money to go to the movies by myself. "What did you see?" I started to tell him the story of the movie, and as I told it, all my feelings came back. I didn't want to cry in front of this boy, but I couldn't. I cried loudly in the yard on the spot. I told him the whole story until the tragic ending.
Annie: What about then? What is his reaction?
George: I don't know. Maybe he thinks it is Coke. I do not remember. I don't remember the movie anymore. But I remember that feeling. I think it's a shame to cry and cry, but telling him the plot of the movie brought out all my touches and tears. It was almost more uncomfortable than when I actually watched the movie, but I couldn't help it.
She looked at him with a smile, and then continued to eat.
Annie: It's so cute. Why haven't you told me before?
George: There are other things you don't know.
Annie: Ah...? Don't tell me that you intend to ruin your image in your twilight years.
George (grins): Don't worry, I won't. But what is my image?
She took a bite and chewed hard. Then looked up at him.
Annie (soft voice): Sometimes you are quite annoying. But you are a good person.
George (laughing hysterically): Can I take you to have a drink?
She couldn't help but smile.
18.Interior view, entrance hall, day
he gave her physical therapy. Count the number of actions.
19.Interior view, living room, day
she is lying on the sofa. He sits in an armchair. They are all reading the newspaper. After a while ---
Annie: Listen to this paragraph ! My horoscope. Proverb: You are bold enough, but be more serious! Love: What you need is high-quality conversation. Career: You mustered your enthusiasm again. But be careful in the process of work. Health: Exercise more to relax yourself. This will make you refreshed.
pause. Then--
George (jokingly): Who told you to read this kind of rubbish.
Pause. Then--
George: Tomorrow afternoon is Pierre's funeral.
Annie: You have to go.
George: I'm afraid it is. Actually, I don't want to go at all.
Annie: Who likes to attend a funeral?
George: Oh, I know a few guys, and they like them. Annette can't wait to dress up. Francois...
Annie: You are so mean. What would you say if no one came to your funeral?
George (indifferently): I must say nothing.
She glanced at him and smiled slightly at his mockery. Then he said—
Annie: Have you talked to Jeanna after I was hospitalized? I mean, does she know if I can't come?
George: Of course.
Annie: What did she say?
George: She was shocked.
Annie: How shocked?
George (a little annoyed): God, what do people look like when they are shocked? She couldn't believe it, she was speechless. I don't remember what else is there. I can't remember it anyway. I have told too many people about this.
pause.
Annie: I'm sorry.
George: No, I should apologize. I didn't mean to be so mean, but I really can't see the point of talking endlessly about this issue.
Pause.
Annie: I talked about this problem endlessly?
George: No. sorry.
Annie: Don't mind.
20. Interior view, entrance hall/living room, the
door of the Japanese apartment opens from the outside, and George comes in. He came back from attending the funeral, and his clothes were also prepared for this occasion. He turns on the light. He got wet. Obviously, it is raining outside. When he closed the door, his eyes fell on Annie. Annie turned her back to him, sitting on the floor in front of the window facing the patio, half leaning against her wheelchair. The window is open.
George: How...? !
He was taken aback for a moment, and hurriedly went over to help her and help her sit in a wheelchair. In the patio outside the window, wind and rain were blowing.
pause.
Annie (as soon as she gets back into the wheelchair, she says immediately): Why did you come back first? what time is it now?
pause.
George woke up instantly. He closed the window silently.
Then stood there blankly.
silence. Then—
Annie (softly): Forgive me, I am too slow.
George: Annie...
Annie: Can you push me into the living room?
pause.
George: Okay.
He turned to her and pushed the wheelchair between the two armchairs in the living room. Turn on the lights. Just stand beside the switch. They all looked exhausted.
George: You have always been good at scaring people.
Annie: That's right. Why did you go home early?
George: I didn't come back early. I came back by taxi. In August, there is no traffic jam on the road.
Annie: That's true. How was the funeral?
George: Annie...!
Annie: How about the funeral, come on, tell me!
He thought for a moment, then walked over, sat in an armchair, faced her, and stared at her. She raised her head and looked at him. He knew in his heart that he was no match for the look in her eyes. Long pause. Then he began to talk ---
George: It's ridiculous. The priest is an idiot. Then a colleague of Pierre delivered a eulogy, which was very embarrassing. His former secretary brought a dual-use radio, and the music played after the eulogy was "Yesterday" by The Beatles. You can't imagine it. Everyone turned to look at her. Obviously, this is not an established part of the funeral. His grandchildren are also present. Of course, they will be happy with the music. Then put the urn on a huge stretcher, which was obviously prepared for the coffin, and we walked outside in the rain. They then transferred the ashes to a small electric car. The car slowly climbed, and it took me a long time to reach the small grave they dug. Many people endured desperately before they laughed. This is horrible for Jeanna. I...
Annie (interrupting him): There is no point in living anymore. I know that the situation will only get worse. Why do you want to suffer both you and me?
George: You didn't make me suffer.
Annie: You don't have to lie, George.
pause.
George: Suppose you are me. Have you never thought that this kind of thing would fall on both of us?
Annie: Of course I thought about it. But imagination is too far from reality.
George: But things get better every day. We...
Annie (interrupting him): George, I don't want to continue. You have tried your best to make me feel better. But I don't want to live this kind of life anymore. It's my own sake. Nothing to do with you.
George: I don't believe it. I understand what you mean. But what if it is me and not you who are sick? what will you do?
Annie: I don't know. I don't bother to think about it. I'm tired. You are exhausting me. I don't even have the energy to speak anymore. I want to go to bed.
He looked at her. Finally he stood up and pushed her wheelchair out of the screen.
21. Interior view, bedroom,
she was lying on the bed at night . The bedside lamp was on.
We heard the sound of the radio coming from the living room: a show about the flora and fauna of the South Pacific or something similar.
22. Interior view, foyer/living room,
George Ri went out of the kitchen and opened the front door. At the door stood the performers in scenes 3 and 4.
George (somewhat surprised, but very happy): Oh, hello! I'm so happy to meet you.
Performer: Please forgive me for this uninvited guest, professor. I tried to call you several times, but I had no luck.
George: I'm sorry. I only answer those calls that are stored in the address book, so I know who the caller is. Why don't you send a text message? Anyway, please come in... After the
guest came in, he closed the door.
Performer: After the concert, I have been busy and have no time to visit. I'm sorry about that, because I'm so happy that you guys can come to the concert.
George: Come with me.
They talked and walked into the living room.
Performer: ... an unexpected opportunity appeared because François Mitri called me — you know him, he is my agent — said he arranged for me with A meeting with the owners of the Champs Elysées Theatre, just tonight, to discuss their new concert series. So I flew to Paris this morning. When I was in the hotel, I thought, I'll give it a try and visit directly. After all, the mansion is only a short walk away from the hotel. Oh, sorry, I almost forgot, this is for your wife.
He took the bouquet out of the wrapping paper and handed it to George.
Performer: Isn't she at home?
George: Oh, at home. I will call her now. Please sit down.
Performer: I hope I didn't bother you.
George: No, absolutely not. I am glad you can come. Your concert shocked us too much. We had hoped to see you soon. please sit down. I'll get you something to drink. A cup of tea?
Performer: No, no, thank you very much.
George: Please wait a moment. I'll put the flowers in the vase; in such hot weather, the flowers will soon wither...
Performer: The flowers I just bought. He should be able to hold on...
but George has left the room with the bouquet in his hand and closed the door with his backhand. The performer looked around.
After a while, we heard the voices of Annie and George in the distance, but we didn't know what they were talking about. The conversation continued for a while.
Finally George opened the door and pushed Annie into the living room in a wheelchair.
Annie: Madan! What a surprise. So happy to meet you!
The performer stood up, wondering how to deal with this situation.
Performer: Mrs. Laurent! My pleasure to meet you too.
Annie: Don't get up. Okay, sit down and don't need to be shocked.
The performer took his seat hesitatingly. George pushed the wheelchair between the two armchairs and sat down too. There was a short pause. The atmosphere is awkward.
Annie: I am so proud of you. We are all ecstatic after listening to your concert. George wanted to buy your new CD the next morning.
Performer: Oh, my goodness! I originally wanted to bring you a CD, but I went so hurriedly that I forgot. I'm so sorry. I will get one today and bring it over.
Annie (smiling): No, no, don't mind. We are happy to do a little bit for your success. Although it is only twenty euros.
Performer: You have done a lot. I owe you too much favor, madam.
Annie: This should be attributed to your own hard work and talent.
Performer (shaking his head slightly): Do you remember the first time you asked me to play a light tune? I was only 12 years old, young and frivolous, and I said, "Why do you want to play a light song?" You really taught me a lesson.
They looked at each other and smiled. pause. He went on and said---
Performer: What happened?
Annie: I have hemiplegia on my right side, that's it. This kind of thing happens when people get old.
Performer: How...?
Annie: Let's talk about something else, okay?
Performer (disturbed): Of course...
Annie: I didn't mean to offend. But I want to enjoy the lovely episodes you brought to our lives.
Performer (sigh of relief): Oh.
Pause.
George: You haven't told us what happened after the Paris concert.
The performer was a little bit unable to find Bei by the words of the couple.
Performer: Well, I actually study in London most of the time. Then went to Copenhagen, there were two performances, also Schubert. My whole life now revolves around Schubert. Have a concert and perform "Improvements" and "Musical Moments". For daily performances, I am still practicing sonatas. Not the late ones, the ones I think I have to work on for a few more years.
Annie: Would you please do me a favor?
Performer (stunned): What?
Annie: Can you play "To Alice"?
Performer (embarrassed): Uh, I don't know if I can remember the score accurately. Beethoven, I haven't played for a long time, but if you want...
Annie: Give it a try.
Performer (hesitatingly): Okay.
He looked at George, then at Annie, got up, walked to the grand piano, and began to play.

27. Interior view, kitchen/foyer/bedroom,
George made a steak at dusk and was dining. We heard the evening news on the radio. Suddenly, there was a loud bang from the next room and the sound of broken porcelain. Annie's exclamation. George got up irritably, walked through the hall, and into the bedroom.
Annie was lying on the floor, next to an overturned bedside table, tableware and unfinished meals scattered all over the floor.
George (first startled, then frustrated): God, what are you doing?
He hurried over, dragged her up roughly, and put her back on the bed.
George: Are you crazy? ! I can't believe it! That's stupid!
He pointed to the broken thing.
George: Look! Do you have to do this? If you need something, can't you just call me?
Annie (cowardly): I'm sorry.
George (still furious): Yes, I'm sorry too.
Annie (softly): I'm sorry.
George leaned over and gathered the scattered things.
George: The light was also broken.

bathroom.
George was wearing pajamas, topless, brushing his teeth. Doorbell rang.
George spit out the mouthwash, wiped his mouth, returned to the hall, and walked to the door of the apartment.
George: Hello? who is it?
No one answered. George was a little annoyed. Annie called him ---
Annie: George? what's up? who is it?
George opened the door. However, outside, what we saw was not the usual landing, but an empty room with bright lights but no windows, about the same size as the room in this apartment. It looks like an unpainted room in a new apartment. Several ladders leaned against the opposite wall. On the wall at the other end of the room, against this side, there is a small door. George was dizzy and didn't understand what was going on. He hesitated across the room and walked to the little door.
Outside the painting, Annie's anxious voice came from a distance——
Annie: George? What happened?
George opened the little door. Behind the door is a narrow, windowless corridor, as brightly lit as the room. At the end of the corridor was another door. George walked to the door and opened it. Behind the door is a small room without windows, as bright as other rooms. Everywhere is silent. George entered the door, turned back, then backed down the corridor, through the room, through the apartment door, and returned to the foyer of his apartment. But their apartment is now empty and bright, with bare, unpainted walls and no doors, only the door to the bedroom is open. Behind that door, there seemed to be an empty and bright room. George walked over.
At the same time, we heard George's voice. At first it was a groan, then a vague yelling began, getting louder and louder.
Immediately, we heard ---
Annie's voice: George, what happened?
29. Interior view, bedroom,
dark at night . George exclaimed.
Annie: Be quiet! Nothing. No.
She struggled to turn on the bedside lamp. George sat on the bed and just woke up, his eyes widened from fear. Seems out of breath.
Annie stretched out her good hand to him, stroked his back, soothed him. He gradually calmed down and fell on the pillow.
Annie: What dream is it?
He did not answer. The chest is still lying together. She stroked him.
George (heavy breathing): I don't understand what's going on... I thought I was crazy... It was impossible...
Annie: What's the matter?
30. Interior view, bedroom, day
Take a close-up shot of the phone's screen. We read the above text:
To Paris on the 12th. Plan to visit in the afternoon. I hope all is well. Looking forward to seeing you all. Love you Ava.
We heard voices outside the picture.
George: It's Ava. They are coming on the 12th.
Annie sat on the edge of the bed, George squatted in front of Annie, put the phone back in his pocket, and continued to put her socks and shoes on.
Annie: Why?
George: I don't know. Obviously she came with Jeff.
Annie: When?
George: I'm not sure. What's the date today? I gonna go see.
Pause.
Annie: I don't like it.
George: What?
Annie: Jeff doesn't need to come.
pause.
George did not agree with her attitude. He continued to dress Annie.
Annie: I don’t need others to comment on my current predicament. I can't stand his British humor.

doing that set of physical therapy exercises again. The situation has improved. George noticed her progress and gave Annie a smile of encouragement. And her reaction to this gave people the feeling that she actually had no confidence, she was just doing her duty.
32. Interior, living room,
close-up view of the day : a CD is inserted into the stereo. When the music starts (the concert heard in Scene 3), George takes out a card from the CD envelope and reads it to Annie.
George: Dear Mrs. Laurent, dear Mr. Laurent, the meeting with you was beautiful and sad. I sincerely hope that everything will be fine. Thank you very much, your former student, Ma Dan.
Music makes their silence less difficult. After a long time, Annie said ---
Annie: Stop the CD.
He looked at her hesitantly, then stopped the music. They were silent.
33. Interior view, kitchen/small room adjacent to the kitchen,
they are dining on the day. Suddenly, Annie said ---
Annie: Where is the family album?
George: Family album? I'm not sure, there, in another room. Why do you ask this?
Annie: Can you bring it to me?
George: What, now?
Annie nodded.
George: What are you doing, Annie?
Annie: I want to see.
George hesitated, this sudden request made him unpredictable.
Annie: Please!
He finally got up and went to the next room. After a while, he came back with a stack of photo albums, pushed Annie's leftover meals away, and placed the top photo album in front of her.
Annie: Thank you.
George (somewhat unhappy): You're welcome.
Annie opened the album with her free hand, looked at the photo, turned the page, and looked at the photo.
Annie: That's great.
George (understood, calmed down): What?
Annie: Life...so long...so long life...
George watched her. She continued to look. After a while, she turned to him.
Annie: Stop looking at me.
George (being caught upright): I didn't look at you.
Annie: Of course you watched it. I'm not that stupid yet.
34. Interior, bedroom, night,
they are all lying in bed. George read the news of the day in the newspaper to Annie. He turned to look at her and found that she was asleep. He put the newspaper on the bedside table and turned off the light.

morning. George helped Annie get up and sit in the wheelchair. He noticed that the bed and her dressing gown were wet.
George: You are soaked.
Annie: What do you mean?
Pause.
George: Wait a minute.
He helped her sit back on the bed and walked out of the room.
George: I'll be back soon.
She was ashamed and embarrassed, sitting on the bed and waiting. He came back with a towel and put it on the wheelchair seat.
George: It's a small matter. Alright.
He lifted her from the bed, moved her into a wheelchair, and pushed her through the hall to the bathroom.
He helped her get up from the wheelchair, let her sit on a stool, and took off her wet nightgown from her head. She began to sob heartbroken. He gently stroked her face.
George: Alright, dear. it's not a big deal. This kind of thing often happens...
Annie (sobbing): I...I've had enough.
He hugged her tightly and stroked her hair, but he was helpless inside.
George: My baby. my sweetheart.
36. Interior view, bedroom, Ri
Anni lying on the bed. She is infusion. Ava sits in a chair by the bed.
Ava: ...think about whether it would be better to invest money upstairs in an apartment. If inflation continues, real estate is the only reliable thing. Now, savings accounts give up to 1.75% interest. Four years ago, Jeff bought some stocks for not much money, and now the entire stock market has collapsed. So we are really annoying. Unfortunately, at this time, other people have the same view, and real estate prices have skyrocketed. Since our return from Scandinavia, I have spent all my spare time studying newspaper advertisements.
pause. In order to break the silence, she added ---
Ava: It will take a lot of time, indeed. We finally gained something.
There was another oppressive silence.
Annie (slowly): Yes, yes, I have...I have...grandma...women have houses...not...houses...money.
Ava: I'm afraid I don't understand what you are talking about.
Annie:...Yes...now...all...houses sold...sold...sold...two clicks...too fast...God, it's not easy...say...sell...the money is gone ...Remaining...still...
pause. Tears rolled in Ava's eyes.
37. Interior view, living room, where
George and Ava's husband Jeff are together. Jeff is about 50 years old. He speaks with an English accent.
George:...Three times a week...I have no experience. Let's try three times if it is enough.
Jeff: How much does she want?
George: Give it by the hour. Let's look at it again.
Jeff: What about her?
George: Annie?
Jeff nodded. George shrugged.
George: It's hard to tell. Sometimes I think she doesn't understand her situation at all. But then I felt that was not the case, but...I don't know.
Jeff: Where's the doctor? How did he say?
George: He...
Ava comes in. She burst into tears.
Ava (sobbing): She talked like a dream. I don't know...
Jeff stood up hesitantly.
Jeff: Hi, dear...
he walked over and led her to the armchair he had just sat in.
Jeff: ... come here, sit down, it's okay.
She shook him off and sat down angrily.
Ava: It's all things.
This blunt collision made him very annoyed, but he didn't make a sound, just sat on the sofa. At this time, Ava turned to George.
Ava: What happened? You can't just watch her lying on the bed like this! I can hardly recognize her! It's ridiculous!
George: There is nothing we can do at the moment. Be calm, dear. She is receiving treatment, they have given her the necessary medicines, and there is currently no choice.
Ava: What does "no choice" mean? Why isn't she hospitalized?
George: She had a second stroke. Dr. Bertier examined her and thought we don’t have to bother to go through the hospitalization procedures. Moreover, the hospital will not take her in, they will send her to a nursing home. What they can do in that place, we can also do at home.
Ava stared at him in astonishment.
George: She will not be sent to a nursing home. I promised her.
Jeff: Don't you think you are too burdened?
George: Do you have a better way?
Jeff is speechless. Ava calmed down a bit and blew her nose.
Ava: I can't believe it. There is still no way to effectively deal with this disease.
George (indifferently): No one is blocking you from finding a way.
Ava got up angrily and walked to the window. George's eyes followed her.
George (calmly): Believe me, I love your mother as much as you. So, please, don't think of me as a complete idiot, I can't even see the facts before my eyes.
Ava: I didn't say that. I just want to ask if everything I see here is the correct answer!
Jeff (to George): Have you ever thought of calling a doctor again?
George: Now, you two shut up for me, can't you? Another doctor has also been here. He said that Bertier was right. From the week together, there will be a nurse coming three times a week. Can we talk about something else now?
Ava: Like what?

he made muesli breakfast on the day, filled a cup with water, and brought it to the bedroom. Sit on the bed next to Annie and feed her.
George: Hi, baby, I hope you like it.
Annie: OK...
he started feeding.
George: I added a little orange juice. I think it tastes very good.
She swallowed very slowly, so food kept spilling from her mouth. He wiped it off with a tea towel, and then fed. After taking a few bites, she closed her mouth.
George: Okay, Annie, you have to eat more. You only swallowed three mouthfuls.
Annie still refused to open her mouth.
George: Please, my dear, a little more.
Annie didn't move. He put the breakfast on the bedside table and brought the cup to her lips. She drank very slowly, taking one sip, then another. Between sucking he would withdraw the cup to give her more time. Suddenly, she said---
Annie:...Mom went to the concert...
George: Huh?
Annie: ...Mom goes to the concert...No clothes...
George: Mom does n't have clothes to go to the concert?
Annie:...Mom went to the concert...no...uh...no...
George: What?
A long silence. George waited.

RiGeorge and the nurse settled Anne in a metal armchair and showered her.
The nurse talked to her in a soothing tone while busying her work.
She turned on the faucet.

nurse remained unmoved and continued to speak in a soothing tone. George stood helplessly.

George and the nurse were sitting at the table drinking coffee. There was a wad of money in front of the nurse. When they were talking, we could hear Annie's cry for help coming from the bedroom.
Nurse: ...we can work in turns. She is from 8 o'clock to 12 o'clock, I am from 2 o'clock to 6 o'clock, or 3 o'clock to 7 o'clock. This can indeed reduce your stress.
George: Let me think about it.
Nurse: You have to decide as soon as possible so that she can arrange working hours.
George: Yes, of course, I will tell you in a few days.
Nurse: Very good. I have to go now...
She picked up the money on the table, put it in her pocket, and stood up.
Nurse: Thank you for your coffee.
George: You're welcome. I will send you out.
They walked out of the room. In the hall, the nurse took off the coat from the hook in the closet, put it on, and explained Anne's continuous call for help while putting it on.
Nurse: Don't take it too seriously. Usually they always say something. She might even just shout: "Mom, mom, mom." This is mechanical.
George (nods, softly): I know.
They walked to the door.
Nurse: Goodbye, sir.
George: Goodbye.
He closed the door behind her. I stayed motionless for a while, then walked into the bedroom, where Annie was still screaming for help.
George sat next to Annie, took her hand, and embraced her. After a while, Annie calmed down, her shouting became lower and lower, and finally stopped completely.
Long pause.
George (slowly, softly): I want to hire another nurse. Two nurses work in shifts. This way everyone can relax. What do you think?
Long pause. Then:
Annie (softly):...Help...Help...

George: Would you please put the bag in the kitchen?
The porter carried the bag into the kitchen. George called to the bedroom.
George: I'm back!
Then he followed the porter into the kitchen.
The porter has already put the bag on the console.
George: Thank you very much.
Concierge: Is there anything else I can do for you, sir?
George: Nothing, thank you, Mr. Merrie. You have helped us a lot.
Concierge: Oh, it's a small matter, sir.
George had taken out his wallet, and he tipped the porter.
Concierge: Thank you very much, sir.
George: If you still need your help, I will tell you.
Concierge: I am happy to help, sir.
He was planning to leave, but stopped in the hall and turned around.
Concierge: Can I say something, now?
George: What are you talking about?
Concierge: My wife and I, we admire what you did. I salute you.
When he was talking, George's cell phone rang.
George (takes out the phone from his jacket pocket): You are so kind. thanks. See you later.
Concierge: Please say hello to your wife for me.
George: I definitely will. thanks.
The porter left the apartment, and George looked at the number displayed on the phone and answered the call.
George: Hello, Ava, how are you? ...It's good.

George:...in On the bridge...on the bridge...
Anne:...on the bridge...
George (smiling to encourage her):...on the Avignon bridge...
Anne:...on...on...
George: ...the bridge...on the Avignon bridge, (he starts to sing) we dance, we dance, on the Avignon bridge, everyone dances in a circle...
he encouraged her to sing with him. Start singing again.
George: On the Avignon Bridge, we dance, we dance...
Annie also tried to sing, and there was a faint smile on her face, but she could only utter isolated syllables.
George (singing to encourage Anne, accompanied by her syllables): On the Avignon Bridge, we dance, we dance... On the Avignon Bridge, everyone dances in a circle...

Second nurse: Huh? ...What should I say? Aren’t we a beautiful landscape?
Annie looked away in disgust. Make a vague sound. The nurse ignored it.

the window facing the patio is open at night . A pigeon perched on the windowsill.
It walked back and forth, and finally jumped into the house and landed on the floor. It began to explore the surrounding environment.
We heard the sound of toilet flushing. George came out of the bathroom. As soon as the door opened, the pigeon was scared. The frightened pigeon flapped its wings and circled the room.
George froze for a moment, then made a "hush, hush" sound, trying to drive the bird to the window. But the bird fled in the opposite direction. George chased it.
He closed the doors of other rooms. We vaguely heard Annie's voice coming from the bedroom.
George grabbed a towel from the bathroom. He chased the bird. Wave the towel at it, wanting it to escape from the window again. George was obviously exhausted and had to slump on the cabinet in the hall.

George and the second nurse.
Nurse: ...whatever you do, sir. I don’t know what your expectations are. In order to come to your house, I quit another job. You should think carefully before deciding whether you need to hire another nurse.
George: But I just discovered how incompetent you are.
Nurse (furiously): What does this mean?
George: I don't want to discuss this issue with you. You don't understand it anyway.
Nurse: No one complained before.
George: Then you are lucky. (Decided to get rid of her) How much do I owe you?
Nurse (forget it): Seven hundred and eighty euros.
George took out his wallet from his jacket pocket on the armchair and took out eight hundred euro bills. The nurse was angry.
Nurse: I have never encountered such a thing before. who do you think You Are? ! I have been doing this job for ten years. There is no need for you to point fingers.
George: Do you have twenty euros?
The nurse grunted out of her wallet and glanced inward.
Nurse: No.
George: Then I'll give you 800 euros. Now you can go.
The nurse stuffed the money into the bag.
Nurse: You nasty old fellow. It's disgusting.
George had put away his wallet, and turned to her when he heard the words, staring at her.
George: I sincerely hope that one day someone will treat you like you treat patients, and you will not be able to defend yourself. Now, get out.
She glared at him, at first she didn't know how to answer, and then---
Nurse: Fuck, bastard!
She left, slamming the door. A few seconds later, we heard the sound of the apartment door latch hitting. George sat in the armchair and stared straight ahead. Then he lit a cigarette, his hand trembling. He smokes.

He tried to pour some tea into her mouth with a sucking cup. She closed her lips tightly and refused to open them.
George: Please, open your mouth... continue... open... Annie! Please! ...Well...don't do that!
He sat upright.
George: You will die if you don't drink water.
Annie made an unrecognizable voice.
George: Is this what you want?
pause. She looked at him. He leaned over to her again and brought the cup to her closed lips.
George: Drink it, Annie, please.
She turned a deaf ear. He opened her lips with his fingers, acting very carefully, but he tried to separate her teeth with the force of his hands. Pour in a little tea. Tea came out of her mouth.
George (grumpyly): Damn it!
He put down the cup, pulled a towel, wiped off the overflowing tea, some of the water had dripped onto the pillow. He wiped the pillow. She stared at him from start to finish. Eventually he threw the towel next to the cup and glared at her. Trying to hide his helplessness and anger.
George: Annie! ...I won't let you die of thirst. If you are stubborn, I will call Bertier and he will take you to the hospital. When you arrive at the hospital, they will force you to feed. You like this?
Pause.
George: I promised you not to let you suffer this sin. But you must cooperate. Otherwise I can't survive.
He picked up the cup again and put it to her lips.
George: Please, Annie!
Her lips were still closed tightly. He pressed the cup to her lips.
George: Drink water, now!
She was very sad, so she opened her mouth and took a sip of water.
George: Good!
She closed her mouth again, and he put down the cup.
George: Very good.
She spit out all the water in her mouth like a fountain. He froze for a moment, then slapped her in the face.
