Because this film is a drama film, the whole film is full of many subtle dialogues, and the vocabulary and dialogue methods used by each person are highly in line with their identities: Ethan's father is a world-weary man, and there are many places in his lines that show his mediocrity; Ethan's mother has long held the moral high ground, boasting about her feelings about Africa while trying to maintain her fair image; Zackery's father is an "unscrupulous" lawyer, so apart from being arrogant and interrupting others' conversations, his lines are full of strong The inductiveness has been guiding the contradiction between Ethan's father and Ethan's mother; Zackery's mother is a hypocrite, and she had always wanted to maintain false gratitude and even scolded Zackery's father's speech, but after making a fool of herself, she also began to swear hysterically.
At the same time, everyone has a unique "drama prop", Ethan's father's prop is "sick mother & hamster"; Ethan's mother's prop is "humanitarian book & fruit pie"; Zackery's father's prop is "mobile phone" "Bad medicine that needs to be covered up"; props to Zackery's mother is "vomit". The film basically takes place in the living room of a house from beginning to end. The narrow stage-like space adds a strong drama to the actors' performances; with the help of the above "props", each character has an excuse to attack other characters. The last film is also continued by everyone's new excuses for attacking each other's "props". The actors have several subtle counterpoints, and those on the same side will attack those on the other side, so the film's only four actors can have multiple groups of different lines to prevent the conflict from repeating.
The inadequacy of this film is also subject to the logic of the drama, which leads to the conflict between the actors being too detached from reality. There are many opportunities for actors to get out of this conflicted stage, but actors always return to the stage for various unnecessary excuses. Fortunately, the length of this film is short, and the audience will feel tired if it continues to develop.
The film echoes the beginning and end of the film. In the park, Ethan and Zackery have long been reconciled, but the parents who have been trying to maintain their children's feelings have pierced the veil and turned from the seemingly peaceful to the state of mutual hostility. It is also quite ironic.
If Polanski could arrange for the reconciled child to unknowingly intrude into the parents' conflict scene at the end of the film, the irony may be stronger.
To sum up, by virtue of the drama, the film has four distinct characters + the conflict that can make the audience feel guilty pleasure, but the authenticity of the conflict is also damaged.
