Whose Hoover is this?

Since the beginning of the filming of Hoover's biography, people have been looking forward to it. Leonardo's impact on the best actor's performance, Eastwood's unique dark and deep director, plus Hoover's own legend and controversy, all make this filming plan look flawless, but why did the Oscar nominations fail? My personal feeling is: focus on chaos.

130 minutes is the standard Eastwood movie configuration. In these 2 hours and a little bit more, Lao Dongmu can make the last ten minutes the most sad and thoughtful, the mother of "Baby" did not give up the search, and the female boxer of "Million Dollar Baby" was finally taken by the old coach himself. End-of-life, "Classic Car" veterans use their protection to cross the racial divide, but in "Hoover," which focuses on Hoover's own brand rather than homosexuality, everything is vague and confusing. This is no accident.

From the beginning of the film, we can feel that Eastwood is trying to use the available historical facts to restore reality, so the role of the mother is a bit redundant. The founder of a legendary agency like the FBI has a lot of stories. It can be seen that Eastwood also planned to do so at the beginning, but as the story unfolds, the focus is constantly being rejected by courtship, suspected love interest. The direction of gossip such as mother complex and homosexual tendencies is inclined. Perhaps the attempt to show the multifaceted character in a biopic is a manifestation of depth, but while shaping a hero, magnifying his personal life, and even questioning the backside of his heroic face makes the film seem to be after a long circle. , the equivalent of saying nothing. The audience can only walk out of the cinema with a blank face: hey. . . Hoover. . . Other than that, got nothing. This, I believe, is sufficient to show that Eastwood has neglected the unity of the narrative and the clarity of focus in this film while maintaining a high-quality directorial schedule.

Leonardo also did not have the expected success. He has not seen Hoover in person, but it is conceivable that Leonardo's old man with his mouth crooked should be closer to himself, but his pronunciation, demeanor and body language are not as good as the same. The elderly Clyde starred in Armie Hammer, whose performance I personally think deserves a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Leonardo's current acting path is somewhat close to that of Robert Downey and Johnny Depp, playing any role as himself instead of playing himself as that role, look at the 5 male stars nominated last year , all do the latter.

So, whose Hoover is this work showing? Leonardo's? Eastwood's? Clyde's? mother's? or real? No one knows, but sadly, no one wants to know.

J. Edgar quotes

  • [first lines]

    J. Edgar Hoover: Let me tell you something. The SCLC has direct Communist ties. Even great men can be corrupted, can't they? Communism is not a political party. It is a disease. It corrupts the soul, turning men, even the gentlest of men, into vicious evil tyrants.

  • J. Edgar Hoover: I don't need to tell you that, what determines a man's legacy is often what isn't seen.
