Believe in yourself, or believe in goodwill

The main visual of the movie poster is a black cross with the names of the three leading actors in white fonts in the middle. Meryl Streep at the top and Philip Seymour Hoffman second. Before watching it, I didn't know what the story would be about, but with the cooperation of these two people alone, this film is worth looking forward to. I seldom pay attention to such things as awards, and there are too many flashy things; it is the joy of chance encounters that is more real. This afternoon, I watched it for two hours without taking my eyes off it. In fact, it is not a shocking film, but there are still some things that moved me.

The theme of almost every movie is not single, but there are not many directors and plot structures that can control multi-themed narratives. On the contrary, in this film, it is clearly stated that "doubt" is the only protagonist, and everyone is entangled in this unclear event. The translation of the Chinese name seems to be very gimmicky, but it can't be expressed like a "desperate wife"Like the theme of the story, attracting attention does not capture the core of the plot itself, it is too superficial. I was just talking to a teacher about best-selling books, and I just read an article a few days ago, saying that every best-selling book is an accident; the teacher said that every best-selling book is a certain. Naturally, from a philosophical point of view, contingency and necessity are relative concepts. All events are a process of precipitation and accumulation. The dark force is surging and we can't see it. So, perhaps as this teacher said, all the claims that are attributed to chance are superficial.

Sister Beville's judgment is not accidental, she has several grounds. One is what Sister James said, she said that she noticed that the little black boy returned to the classroom with abnormal behavior and the smell of wine in his mouth; the second is what she saw, one day Pastor Flynn grabbed another one. The boy's wrist, the scene of the boy trying to break free. Both scenarios are objective descriptions, but this "doubt" might not have occurred at all if there was no other judgment in mind. This judgment is that she suspects that Pastor Flynn is inherently evil and anti-traditional, and all the challenges to traditional behavior - ballpoint pens, pop songs, and three sugar cubes in tea are based on disrespect for the church. So here, the confrontation between the principal and the pastor can be regarded as a confrontation between maintaining tradition and updating ideas.

The two sides of this confrontation are obvious, and from a developmental point of view, the pastor will undoubtedly have the last laugh. However, the principal's own stubbornness towards this matter revealed many hidden behaviors. She brought in the mother of the black boy, and the mother said a lot of things, which in turn enriched the content of this doubt. What is the real reason why the little boy was beaten by his father? Why would he be killed if he was in his original school? Did he really have anything to do with the priest?

However, the truth of the matter is not so important. Discussed here are the themes of trust and doubt surrounding this matter. After the first conversation between the principal and the pastor, the pastor immediately gave a "rumor" speech. The description of rumors in the Bible is also very appropriate. Many words can never be obtained, but they are passed on by people, and eventually they lose their original appearance. It's unknown where the rumors begin, but it's best to stop there before you and I meet unsubstantiated claims. The weakness of our thinking is that we always believe those things that conform to our value judgments; and all open-ended questions are subjective questions, and you cannot be objective when you think from the standpoint of your own interests - of course, all propositions are Not absolutely objective. But based on the possibility that some will hurt others, the end of the rumors is still well-intentioned.

The biggest attraction of the film is naturally the drama of the two super-strength actors. Especially the sense of oppression that two people get along in a separate space is very real. Burning each other's small universes, trying to overwhelm each other in momentum. However, they will find that even though they are firm, the principal still has reservations that are not certain, and the pastor also has the trepidation of how much the other knows. Eyes, gestures, and movements were all in place, and the lights in the principal's office suddenly went out. Throughout the play, Meryl Streep is wrapped in a large black nun's uniform; it is the priest who does the preaching who alternates between purple and pale green. The contrast of gender and color, the priest's clean nails, seems to imply something. The benevolent see benevolence, and the wise see wisdom.

The pastor finally left. It should be the words of the principal that played a role. However, his subsequent promotion made the headmaster a little confused. Could it be this promotion, the approval from the bishop, that made her finally begin to doubt herself? Or, seeing the people who were once hostile getting better day by day, made her have another round of reflection on her "mistakes"? Women always trust their intuition and say things must be how they are. Anyway, when she ended up sitting on the pews and said to Sister James that I doubt myself too, it was probably ironic. Therefore, this film has nothing to do with skin color, religion, or sexual orientation. It just tells you and me that sometimes you have to believe in yourself, and sometimes you have to believe in goodwill.
