First of all, let me express. The frontal dialogue between the two at the end is textbook level, and the performance, lines, and rhythm are perfect! I disagree with most of the film critics, and I don't think it's reflecting the stubbornness and skepticism of Aunt May's character. In fact, whether the priest does it or not is only a minor issue. If everyone is discussing this point, I believe the director will be very disappointed! The first thing we inevitably have to consider is that the background premise of this story is a church campus!
In a church country, such child abuse scandals can be described as earth-shattering, and the impact is enough to shatter beliefs. How can we underestimate it? At the end, the breakdown of the dialogue between Aunt Mei and Sister Zhan revealed all Aunt Mei's grievances. She didn't know how unfair it was to the priest with her own suspicions and excuses piled up with lies, but she couldn't bear the consequences once the doubts became facts, She would rather bear the punishment of not being able to sleep than bet on the truth! This is precisely the responsibility that her position says she undertakes and resolutely implements. It reminds me of the "whistleblower" of the current epidemic. If you say that there is no doubt, should you press your own doubts, in order not to be held accountable by fellow travelers If you are dismissed by your superiors, you will have to press your own doubts, and the consequences of this doubt will need to be borne by the whole world. Let’s ask what we will do or how we should do it. This is always a dilemma. After the end, we still can't ignore the greatness of every kind!
To sum it up in one sentence, will we really sleep peacefully if we don't do something out of doubt, as Sister Zhan argues? There are two situations. First, the priest didn’t do it or the incident never happened, but we would still question it repeatedly before going to bed. Second, the priest really did it and the incident happened, so we would always regret asking something before going to bed that we didn’t make a decision! So dare we ask how in the end we can sleep peacefully?
