"Happy Death Day": Die N times in 100 minutes, an alternative growth journey of a bad girl (Part 2)

As a dark horse in the box office, "Happy Death Day" actually uses a very classic storytelling method, which is what we often call "Time Loop" .

From the point of view of the whole film, the director adopts a non-linear way of storytelling. There are plenty of movies with the same narrative in which the heroine keeps dying and waking up to her birthday. In addition to classic films such as "Terrorist Cruise", "Super Time Crime", "Groundhog Day", "Edge of Tomorrow", "Source Code", the Korean drama "My Boss Dies Once a Day" some time ago also uses Time reincarnation.

"Happy Death Day" does not fall into the stereotypes while using old stalks, which is inseparable from his incorporation of elements such as funny, campus, youth, love, and family affection into the film. The screenwriter used these elements to eliminate many of the horrors brought about by death, and took a step closer to a film that was originally relatively niche to the public.

friendship

Although everyone in Teri's sorority looked like they were smiling on the surface, they actually hated each other behind the scenes. For example, the head of the dorm, Daniel (Rachel Matthews), usually enjoys the control of being a queen and likes to secretly wear the heroine's clothes. Another example is that the heroine doesn't like her roommate Lori Spengler ( Lori Spengler) who is very good at school. Bee Modine).

The friendships between girls and the games in the dormitory depicted in this film are all too familiar to me. It seems that in every small group there is always one or two people who are not so attractive to everyone. Some of them are nerds, some are not good at weight management, some are withdrawn, etc. different".

Just as I sighed after watching "The Umbrella Academy", you must be kind to those who don't seem so conspicuous at ordinary times. Who knows if they will be the next time bomb?

affection

Since her mother's death, Teri's relationship with her father, David Gelbman (Jason Baier), has not been very good, so that at the beginning of the film, her father's birthday greetings are cut off impatiently by Teri. Lose. With the death again and again, Teri slowly tried to accept the love from her father, and the audience gradually understood why she became such a bitch now.

Teri's mother is a beautiful, gentle and wise woman. In the later growth process, she lacked the love from her mother, and her father's inexpressive personality, she simply grew into a completely opposite appearance to her mother.

This movie teaches us on the family line that some people who seem arrogant and domineering must have family reasons. It also tells us to give our children a loving and warm growing environment as much as possible.

love

At the beginning of the film, Teri wakes up in the bed of the male protagonist Carter Davis (Isel Brossard). Don't get me wrong, Carter brought her back only because he was very drunk at the party the night before. He didn't do anything except take care of her to rest, a typical combination of "campus man + nerd".

As the only insider who knew that Teri was in the dilemma of the time loop, Carter believed the heroine again and again without memory, and tried his best to help her. In the process, Terry also gradually discovered what true love is from the mentality of the game world.

There's a scene in the movie where she remembers that Carter had died before that, when she was finally able to kill the killer as she wished to end the time loop. If she ends all this, Carter will not be resurrected, so she decides to die so that when she wakes up, Carter will also be resurrected.

From this we can also see that the heroine has grown into a person who will care about the safety of others and even sacrifice herself.

When we watch a thriller, we often laugh at the protagonists' lack of IQ and lament that they "don't die if they don't do it." But our heroine Terry is simply a clear stream in the thriller world, and the whole IQ is online. When she was evading the pursuit, it could be said that she had a lot of brainstorming and strange tricks.

For example, once she found that a murderer was chasing her behind her, and the traffic police happened to stop her car and asked to see her driver's license. After turning her head around quickly, Terry found a way to escape from the pursuit, so she looked at the traffic police uncle with particularly sincere eyes and said:

"I just took a pound of marijuana and ecstasy like I was eating melon seeds. You should take me back to the police station and lock me up."

Overall, "Happy Death Day" is a small budget film that successfully blends a chick movie with a horror movie. For viewers who don't often watch horror movies, the scary level is moderate and suitable for entry-level horror movies; for horror movie lovers, there are many Easter eggs that pay tribute to classic horror movies, waiting for everyone to slow down. Dig slowly.

Of course, the film still has its flaws. Although the audience followed the heroine to know who the boss was and ended the time loop, but how did this cycle start and who started it, and the audience still did not get a reasonable explanation when the movie ended.

Fortunately, "Happy Death Day 2" has been released in early 2019. In the second part, will the screenwriter explain the stalks buried in the first part? I'll talk to you after Bingbing watches the movie.

Happy Death Day quotes

  • [ending scene: Tree and Carter are at the restaurant, watching Danielle's interview on TV. Tree's cellphone rings]

    Tree Gelbman: Hey, Dad. Dad.

David Gelbman: Tree, are you okay? Are you hurt?

Tree Gelbman: Dad, no, Dad. I'm fine. I promise.

    David Gelbman: Are you sure?

Tree Gelbman: Yeah. Just a little scratched up.

    David Gelbman: All right.

Tree Gelbman: Okay. I'll see you soon.

    David Gelbman: I love you.

Tree Gelbman: I love you, too. Bye.

    [Tree closes her cellphone]

Carter Davis: So, uh, now that your bedroom is officially a crime scene and all, where are you planning on crashing?

Tree Gelbman: [chuckles] Is that an invitation?

Carter Davis: You sure you wanna wake up in the dorm room again?

Tree Gelbman: Only if it's yours.

Carter Davis: Only of course, you'll have to sleep in Ryan's bed.

    Tree Gelbman: [smiles] Of course.

Carter Davis: Yeah. We can, you know... oh, uh... I almost forgot.

[Carter takes Tree's bracelet out of his pocket and hands it to Tree]

Carter Davis: You left this little guy.

    Tree Gelbman: Thanks.

Carter Davis: Hey, you know what your little scenario reminds me of?

    Tree Gelbman: What?

    Carter Davis: Uh...

    Tree Gelbman: What's that?

Carter Davis: "Groundhog Day". The movie "Groundhog Day"?

Tree Gelbman: [shakes her head] I don't know.

    Carter Davis: With Bill Murray?

    Tree Gelbman: Who's Bill Murray?

Carter Davis: [surprised] Are you kidding me? "Ghostbusters".

Tree Gelbman: [shrugs] Sorry. I... I don't know.

Carter Davis: How do you sleep at night? You've never seen "Groundhog Day"?

    Tree Gelbman: No.

  • [Tree storms into her room. She hastily starts packing her belongings]

Lori Spengler: She finally rolls in...

    [Lori looks at Tree, puzzled]

    Lori Spengler: Going somewhere?

Tree Gelbman: Yes. As far away as possible.

    Lori Spengler: Tree, what's wrong?

Tree Gelbman: [continues packing] Me. I was wrong. I thought that if I stopped running that I could beat it. But it's never gonna stop.

Lori Spengler: Tree, you're freaking me out.

Tree Gelbman: Hello, that's me, a freak!

[Lori takes the cupcake, lights the candle, approaches Tree and hands her the cupcake]

Lori Spengler: [smiles] Tree. Tree, look. Happy birthday.

Tree Gelbman: [turns her back to Lori] Thanks. But I already ate it last night.

[suddenly, it dawns on Tree who is the murderer. She stops packing]

Tree Gelbman: Oh, my God. I died in my sleep.

    Lori Spengler: What?

    [Tree turns to face Lori]

    Tree Gelbman: You killed me.

    Lori Spengler: What?

Tree Gelbman: You poisoned it. But I never ate it before.

[a flasback: Tree drops the cupcake on the floor without eating it]

Tree Gelbman: So you had to find another way. Then Tombs fell right into your lap. Perfect scapegoat.

[flashbacks: Tombs is transported on a stretcher while Lori watches; Lori injects Tombs sedatives; Lori plants a knife in Tombs' room and covers his face with the babyface mask; Lori kills Tree, then removes the mask]

Tree Gelbman: You had access to him. Did you drug him first? You knew that if he escaped, everyone would assume that he killed me. But it was always you.

Lori Spengler: [chuckles nervously] Tree, are... is this a joke? You think I would actually try to poison you with a freaking cupcake?

Tree Gelbman: [shrugs] Okay then. Prove it.

[Tree takes the cupcake, blows the candle and hands the cupcake back to Lori]

Tree Gelbman: Go on, Lori. Take a bite. Go on, Lori.

Lori Spengler: [shakes her head, chuckling nervously] You really are crazy.

Tree Gelbman: [smiles] Okay then. I'll take it down to the police. I'm sure they can tell us what your little birthday treat is made of.

[as Tree starts walking away, Lori wears a sinister expression. She grabs Tree's hair, then knocks her against the bathroom door. Tree falls to the floor. While she is momentarily stunned, Lori chuckles nastily, locks the room door and faces Tree]

Lori Spengler: [contemptuously] You stupid little whore.

Tree Gelbman: [fearfully] I know I've been a bad roommate, but... isn't this a bit much? What the hell?

Lori Spengler: Oh, I don't know. Maybe because you wouldn't stop sleeping with him.

    Tree Gelbman: What? Gregory?

Lori Spengler: [venomously] But he just kept choosing you over me. I guess all he wanted was a cheap slut like you!

Tree Gelbman: [in disbelief] Wait, you've been killing me over some stupid guy?

Lori Spengler: [shakes her head] Oh, that's not the only reason. You're a dumb bitch, too! What I really wanna know is, how did you figure it out?

Tree Gelbman: Because you've killed me before.

Lori Spengler: [smiles] Then I guess I'm just gonna have to do it again.

[Lori steps toward Tree. Tree kicks her in the stomach. Lori doubles up painfully]
