"I'm a high school student and I have a terminal illness"

At the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, a youth film won the Jury Award and the Audience Award for American dramas.

It has a fancy name - Me and Earl and the Dying Girl .

What's more peculiar is that its original novel of the same name was published in 2012, and the adapted script turned out to be on the blacklist of the "Best Script in the Hollywood Industry" in 2012 !

Why is a blacklisted script still successfully made into a movie?

It's up to you to ask the movie yourself.

Director: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon

Screenwriter: Jesse Andrews

Production Region: United States

Starring: Thomas Mann, Olivia Cooke, RJ Saylor

Length: 105 minutes

There are media reviews-

"It's not only an excellent drama, it's an excellent comedy, but it's also a little fresh from a terminally ill youth."

But, not bloody at all .

The tears and urine spots of terminally ill youth films do not exist.

It's warm , but also a little spoof and quirky .

This is a little story on campus.

Whether Gray, Earl or Rachel in the film, they are all unobtrusive characters on campus .

Gray is an eccentric boy who is generally "unsocial" on campus. He is withdrawn and does not like to make friends. Although there are girls he admires, he can only watch from a distance.

Grey's only "friend" Earl, who is also eccentric, prefers to hide in the history teacher's office at lunchtime, avoiding the gang-studded common dining room.

Although Gray is always reluctant to admit that Earl is his friend, only a partner.

But this pair of partners who are also movie enthusiasts, their favorite thing to do on weekdays is to remake and spoof classic movies.

They have remade 42 movies . Classics such as "A Clockwork Orange", "Soul Broken Venice", "The Seventh Seal", and "Midnight Cowboy" could not escape their clutches and were remade and spoofed by them.

Rachel , Gray's unlucky female classmate, was told one day in high school that she was terminally ill.

And these three people who don't like to socialize slowly come together.

Although under the pressure of Gray's mother, she gave her companionship and care on the grounds of "giving love to sick classmates".

The optimistic, cheerful, patient and strong Rachel changed Greg's original world, and the two became good friends.

Earle exists as an essential assist.

As their relationship grows closer, Rachel's illness takes a turn for the worse, and Greg is determined to do something for her.

Eventually, Gray decided to take "Goddess"'s advice and make a movie for Rachel .

Let this hard-won friendship undergo the necessary sublimation...

Greg's filmmaking is just like many people who have a movie fanatic complex make films. At first, it is an imitation. Over time, when he really wants to make a work, those imitated styles will subtly become their own unique style. Style, in a big way, is the so-called authored aesthetics .

Seeing the serious film that Greg made in the end, it was still a dreamy stop-motion animation, and I was moved to be a filmmaker with a dream of making a film.

Greg's experience is the experience of many filmmakers when they were young. I believe that Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg or Lars von Trier who were shooting blindly with a 16mm film machine all gave it a shot. had similar things.

Experience tells us that the themes of any film's story can often be found in the protagonist's human weakness .

In order to create a character, the screenwriter will use the protagonist's shortcomings or character flaws to create troubles and obstacles for the protagonist, and the protagonist must work hard to overcome these shortcomings in order to achieve his story goals.

For example , in "Citizen Kane", at the beginning, the old Kane died alone. Why does a person who is rich and wealthy end up alone?

Because of his character flaw, he never sacrifices himself, but longs for love. Everything is doomed to fail, so the theme of the film is "In order to obtain love, we must love others regardless of return."

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl have a similar theme.

In order to get through high school smoothly, Greg closed himself up until he paid a friendship to the dying girl, and he also reap the reaction force from the friendship.

It's only after the girl's death that he realizes that it takes a lot to open up.

He understood too late.

But isn't this the "regret" that must be experienced in youth?

The story of "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" is about friendship, about injury, about death, about a youth who hates school and the paranoid movie dreams of a teenager.

The people inside will quarrel and swear at each other because of their dissatisfaction.

But everyone has their own philosophy of life and the way they treat those around them.

Dad would call his son "Buddy". Mom was angry when she learned that Greg was disqualified from school, but hugged her son first and said we'll talk about it later;

The teacher will also tell the students the private experience of his father like a friend...

This is the youth of most people who can resonate with us. Campus friendship will always occupy more than those bloody loves. There is no forced, deadly love between men and women, pure and true.

Those who like literature will secretly write, those who like movies will secretly shoot movies, and those who like music will save money to buy guitars;

I will be troubled and worried because of the pressure of parents, heavy academic work, and confusion about the future.

But there will be no girls who commit suicide, get pregnant, or have abortions for the sake of boys, nor will there be boys who fight and kill people for girls, or turn against their families...

It's warm when you see the three of them sitting on the steps eating ice cream,

It hurts when you see Greg and Rachel arguing with each other,

When you see Rachel with her shaved hair lying on the hospital bed with her eyes wide open and earnestly watching the movie he made for her, you will cry with sadness...

There is no publicity and indulgence, but carefully restrained temper, looking for the true self.

I am just an ordinary young man, I have a bad temper, but I am eager to meet you.

So amazing, there are a lot of youth films that always make people forget it, the story has no memory at all (well, maybe I have watched too many domestic youth films), but I think I will still remember this story after a long, long time. . The humor in the first half is great. How can you not love the movie fans? The shots are rich and playful, as is the case with youth films.

Hugh Jackman sounded an Easter egg. It’s quite teary, but not bloody. The classic spoof movies made by the protagonist are very interesting.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl quotes

  • Greg: So if this was a touching romantic story this is probably where a new feeling would wash over me and suddenly we would be furiously making out with the fire of a thousand suns. But this isn't a touching romantic story.

  • Greg: The idea behind each one was we took a film that we like and made the title stupider. And then made a new film to reflect the new stupid title. It's a formula that only produces horrible films, but for some reason we kept using it.
