"The Kids Are All Right": Gay families aren't easy either

I thought it was a traditional warm comedy, but it turned out to be such an alternative story.

A lesbian family with sons and daughters. Watching two women live like normal couples, having sex, caring for each other, discussing children, showing affection in public, and the children calling them both mothers, feels a little weird. However, the story gets interesting when their child secretly meets the biological father who donated the sperm.

A sperm donor, just because he thinks sperm donation is more interesting than blood donation, just for a small amount of money, has become a father of two children. Humans are amazing! His presence brought a breath of fresh air to the lesbian family. Mothers will see the expressions of their familiar children on his face, and children will also be curious about their father's character, occupation, and attitude towards life, as if they can discover another side of themselves. His presence also complicates this already unusual family. Many sensitive and delicate relationships are born: After all, many roles of a man in a family cannot be replaced by a woman, such as playing basketball with his son, chatting with his daughter, and evaluating his son's buddies. But the part where he had sex with one of the mothers was far-fetched. Well, at least this part is hilarious and pushes the contradiction to a climax. Tell the audience that lesbian families also have a midlife crisis, and that the third child may be the father of the child.

Probably because the subject itself is trendy enough, the film is simple and traditional, the story is straightforward, the performance is credible, and the dialogue Real, even a bit like a documentary. It is also not taboo to describe sex. The sex life of two gay women, the sex life of the sperm donor, and the ignorance of the son and daughter about sex are all revealed.

I saw a Madonna movie "The Next Good Thing" ten years ago, which was about the social problems caused by gays being unable to get married. A gay man has drunk sex with his female friend. After she became pregnant, the two decided to give birth to the child and raise them together. Six years later, the female friend married another man and wanted to take the child away. Gay men can't get married, and their relationship with this child is not legally recognized, so they can only give up their six-year-old child. Very bitter.

Now it seems that after homosexuals fight for the right to marry, there are also many follow-up problems.

It is said that the director and screenwriter Lisa Chalodenko is a lesbian, and her child was born by artificial insemination. A large part of this movie should be derived from her real life and her troubles with child development. The film's happy ending and title, "The Children Are All Well," also indicate her optimism about lesbian marriage.

Even if it's not about lesbian families and sperm donors, it's just the film's meticulous observation, tenderness, constant jokes, perfect handling, and great acting. One of the most admired indie productions of the year.
