Tim Burton's fascination with stop-motion animation and dark themes was already on display in The Nightmare Before Christmas and Zombie Bride. This animated feature film "9" produced by him is still strange and inexplicable. "9" is based on the background of the imminent extinction of human beings and the villain robot after the war, and divides human nature into 9 cloth bags. Their defiance against robot domination has reorganized human nature.

The plot of this film is not too new: the robot invented by the doctor was used by the military, which led to the destruction of human beings. Before dying, the doctor made 9 cloth bags carrying fragments of his own humanity and guided them to rebuild the new world. The most interesting thing about this film is the symbolic meaning of these nine dolls. They are tied together with the same mentality - rebellion. Resistance is the basic element for human beings to survive in nature and society: the resistance to self-energy enables human beings to invent tools; the resistance to nature enables human beings to form a social system and evolve into the ruler of the earth. This is the source of why human beings grow into human beings. At the end of the world, this source has become the only trailblazer that can reorganize human nature.

Number 1 - Rebellion against fear. No. 1 fears and compromises against powerful enemies, and is also the coordinator of social order. The most essential and primitive resistance of human beings is the subconscious resistance to inner fear, and the most direct manifestation is to escape - this is one of the most primitive emotions of human beings. No. 1, who was most afraid of death, finally blocked the hole for No. 9 because he saw "the inevitable". Human progress is often achieved only after being forced into a desperate situation;

No. 2 - sacrifice in resistance. No. 2 has a strong interest in the existence of nature, which means that human beings' resistance to nature has entered an active stage: exploring nature, studying science, and eager to turn the unknown into the known. The first sacrifice of No. 2 symbolizes that active resistance is risky in the early stage, which is a metaphor for the price that human beings have to pay for resisting nature;

No. 3 and 4 - resistance to living alone. The twins are always on camera at the same time, and they are very close. The weakness of individual human capacity pushes them to rebel against individuals who disrupt the harmony of the group. They also possessed pure and friendly hearts, a metaphor for the foundation of harmonious coexistence of human beings. They are not directly involved in combat, only providing collaboration and support when necessary. Mutual assistance is an essential feature for human beings to form a social system. Their refusal to be alone is the best footnote to emotional fetters;

Number 5 - Revolt against the known. No. 5 is the representative of human beings at the grassroots level of society. He lives in the small society set up by No. 1. When No. 9 persuades him to save No. 2 who was captured, he falls into a contradiction - as a comrade-in-arms, he should save No. 2, but that would disobey No. 1 (leadership class) will. Humans who have entered a social form are surrounded by known dogmas from birth. But are the existing social order or unwritten rules really always correct? Do you have the courage to resist when your indoctrinated philosophy goes against your inner will? No. 5 rebelled against the life-saving dogma that restrained him, and ended up in a tragic death, but became the chief hero for the reconstruction of human nature;

No. 6 - spiritual resistance. Representing thinkers in human history, a form of resistance that uses inner thinking. Thinking often plays a leading and enlightening role in resistance;

No. 7 - resistance by force. On behalf of the revolutionaries in human history, the use of armed warfare to carry out the form of resistance. She (the only female character in this film) has a rebellious attitude towards the enemy, and she is also rebellious towards No. 1 of the same faction; No.

8 - resistance to threats. Represents a relatively primitive passive resistance - an instinctive resistance when a threat is approaching. He tends to run away when danger is far away and fight when danger is near. It can be said that the number 8 is a collection of negative emotions in human nature.

Number 9 - The gathering and growth of resistance. The beginning of the film is the sewing process of No. 9, and then there are frequent scenes of him being "opened", implying that he is a newborn, an empty container. He has only a kind heart and dare to take responsibility. Through him, various elements of resistance condense to form a complete human individual. This new individual is not only individual, but also social.

The last surviving films are Nos. 3, 4, 7, and 9. This combination can also be seen as parent and child - a symbol of the family. After the other 5 brothers flew into the sky, it started to rain, and in the rain was the surging of primitive life. To resist the spirit, it is necessary to promote the re-creation of human nature.
