Synopsis
Buddhist diplomat Justin (Ralph Fiennes) meets reformist Tessa (Rachel Weisz) at a press conference.
The two hit it off at first sight and soon developed into a relationship of lovers.
After getting married, Tessa used Justin's position to often travel to some remote areas in Africa to do charity and help poor people.
She didn't stop running until she was pregnant, she loved what she did very much.
But one night, Justin accidentally saw an email on Tessa's computer.
It says, "What did you and Arnold do at a hotel on Sunday night? Does Justin know?"
In fact, Justin doesn't know his wife that well, and Tessa never tells him about work.
Knowing that Arnold was a Kenyan doctor who often accompanied Tessa to and from Africa, he began to wonder if his wife was cheating on him.
Although it is not specified, this matter seems to have taken root in Justin's mind.
The daily rush and toil made Tessa's body very poor, and finally she lost her child, which was a big blow to the two of them.
Justin loves his wife very much, and he hopes that he can get to know her better and protect her better in the future.
Unexpectedly, Tessa died on a trip to Africa, and Arnold, who was accompanying her, disappeared.
Justin was so heartbroken that he couldn't believe the wife he had promised to protect had left him so soon.
He wants to investigate, he wants to find the murderer of Tessa.
In Tessa's belongings, he found a letter, which turned out to be a love letter to Tessa from a colleague of his foreign ministry.
And he learned through Tessa's friend that Arnold was actually gay.
Suspicious things ensue, overwhelming Justin.
However, after an in-depth investigation, he discovered that he, like Tessa, had fallen into a huge conspiracy...
Video Analysis
A film adapted from the novel of the same name, through a love story, reflects a series of issues related to politics and society, which brings great touch to people. The male lead, Ralph Fiennes, is one of my favorite actors. He played a very impressive Nazi officer in "Schindler's List", and in this film he also gave us an extremely Excellent performance.
It's a very good story, with a serious and deep subject matter, with social sinister and political intrigue, it's fascinating enough, but I don't think it's good enough to convert into a movie, especially in the narrative, the plot seems fragmented, not coherent, plus The deliberate switching of the camera makes it difficult to keep up with the trend of the plot. Similar films I think "Scorched Earth" are better, and they also aim to touch people's hearts. Obviously, the latter does better.
Love is the basis for us to enter this film. The director portrayed a pair of lovers for us in the first half of the film. The suspense is also based on whether his wife Tessa cheated, but I think it has a paving effect on the later chapters. The only difference between the two is the point of contradiction.
Her husband, Justin, is more Buddhist. Although he is a diplomat, he doesn’t usually socialize very much. On the other hand, my wife Tessa is different. At first, I even suspected that the purpose of her marrying Justin was just for her own career. She was running around with a big belly, and seldom communicated with her husband. Like Justin, he didn't understand what Tessa was doing.
The demarcation point is Tessa's death. Justin, who loves her deeply, decides to investigate. With the deepening of the investigation, he slowly understands his wife's work and is gradually assimilated to fulfill his wife's last wish without fear of risk. I believe that in the process of watching the movie, the audience's thoughts also slowly changed with Justin, from not understanding Tessa at the beginning to "it turned out that I would do the same if I changed it" .
The most obvious of them are these two scenes. In the first part, when Justin drove Tessa out of the hospital, Tessa asked him to stop. She wanted to help the black mother and son who had just lost her daughter, but the proposal was rejected by Justin on the grounds that millions of dollars Everyone needs help, how can we help? Justin, who was chased and killed in the latter part, wanted to board the plane with a black girl named Abu, but was refused. The captain said, "There are hundreds of people like this outside, so we can't break the rules." At this time, Justin's attitude was the same as that of Tessa at that time. If he could save one, he could save one. How could he not be saved?
Therefore, the doubts that Tessa left us in the first half of the film were easily resolved, such as how Tessa could promise to sleep with Sandy because of a letter, such as why Tessa didn't tell Justin the truth, etc. The second half, which was criticized for being slow-paced, really touched my heart, especially when it came to life. Maybe everyone is equal and respecting life is an idealized slogan. How many places in this world are like the ones shown in the film, and we want to help but have no choice?
To really understand a person, you may have to know all her secrets, and by that time, you may have become just like her.
