Half Mirror of the American Civil War

The half-mirror story of the American Civil War is
actually a bit like Homer's "Odyssey". The hero Inman is a deserter on the battlefield for love, in order to go home and reunite with his lover. On the way home, he overcomes a series of Difficulty, and resisted all kinds of temptations, especially the temptation of women, and finally returned to his hometown and met his lover. Although Inman died unfortunately after a night of passion with his lover, his life was continued through the posthumous daughter, and the film gave the audience a bright and beautiful ending.
Although the film focuses on the love between Inman and Ada, it is not the love between the two that left a deep impression on me, but the various aspects of the American Civil War that the film shows us. The film is a bit epic, but still It's not very thick, so the film can be seen as a half-mirror of the American Civil War.
The attitude of the film is to show the war as objectively as possible. Therefore, we can not only see the young people in the south joining the army and take pride in killing the soldiers from the north, but also the brutal suppression of the southern government against deserters and their recipients in the south, although the suppression in the film is for selfish purposes. At the same time, the film does not have a favorable impression of the northern soldiers, which can be seen from the clips in which the three northern soldiers used the baby as a threat, robbed food and attempted to gang rape the southern young woman.
In addition to the main line of love, the film is mainly a reflection on the American Civil War, especially the devastation caused by the Civil War to the society and the common people. The land is barren, food is in short supply, and there is an extreme shortage of men because they were killed in the war (refer to the scene where Inman passed through the "daughter country" on his way home), leaving orphans and widows to survive, plus some government personnel plundered land and Property, all of which make ordinary people live in poverty, gradually become dissatisfied with the war, have reflection, and look forward to the end of the war as soon as possible and return to normal life. This theme is expressed very clearly through the words of the characters in the film.
One paragraph is what Ruby said after her father was shot: It's all people's fault. They called the war "a dark cloud over the land." They call for the wind and rain (I think it is a metaphor for the guide party to start a war), and then they stand in the wind and rain and call: "Damn, why is it raining." (I think it is a metaphor for the suffering and devastation suffered in the war).
The other part is said by Ada at the end of the film, and the theme is more straightforward: what we lost will never come back, the earth is devastated, the blood flows into rivers, the soul is traumatized, only to let the past remain silent in the heart and absorb the pain lesson.
From the performance point of view, I like Ruby the most in the film. She is vulgar and capable, kind and straightforward, cold on the outside and hot on the inside, optimistic and upbeat, and does not succumb to the harsh environment and brutal evil forces. She is played by Renee Zellweger. , very endearing. Secondly, the character image of Ruby's father is also well shaped.
I like the warm and beautiful ending of the film, and I still like to see a happy ending. Although many people, including Inman, died, after all, more people survived and started a new life.
