Film review "Breakup Letter"

I read the novel and wanted to watch the movie. However, the film is not 100% restored, and the two different expressions have their own merits, and they are all a little disappointed after watching. There are two main lines of the story. This is a story about love and a story about the relationship between father and son. The story is not complicated, young men and women meet at the beach, and everything seems to be so logical. The male protagonist is an active-duty soldier, and the female protagonist is a college student. They spent a happy vacation together, and then returned to each other's life track. When they parted, they decided to pass on the book. In my mind, "letter" is an ancient thing. Now we don't write letters anymore. Wechat, QQ, and phone calls. So whoever sends Jinshu in the cloud, even though Shanmeng is there, Jinshu can't be recorded. In the past era, it is not that the tender intestines and knots that have been turned over and over again do not exist, but they have become more poetic after being embellished by time. When the picture of the hero and heroine reading the letter appeared, I was a little surprised at first, but I gradually accepted this illogical setting, probably feeling that feelings really need to flow slowly. After reading the breakup letter, John burned all correspondence, and several years later, after the death of his father, he went to see the mistress, who said she kept all correspondence. No matter which way it is, it can be proved that in love, their hearts are the same and love each other, no one is less than the other. Even halfway through, Savannah married Tim. Some people commented that the father-son relationship was written so deeply in the novel that it made the love aspect seem clichéd. There is indeed such a suspicion. At the beginning, especially when watching a movie, watching the male and female protagonists meet and become intimate, I was a little drowsy, but it was because I could guess or get used to it. In the middle of the film, his father is sick, and John goes home alone. In the past, when he came home, his father would cook dinner or study coins. Then when his father was seriously ill, John read his letters to his father in the hallway, discussing the only subject of interest to him, coins. That picture brought me to tears. When Savannah says his father is ill, John gets emotional and hurts Tim, and he uses the word endure. He had been putting up with his father, just like thousands of children in a family would put up with their parents, chattering and communicating poorly with them, but parents always loved their children. They have their own flaws and the way they express it is wrong, but life is so difficult, they try to bring up their children, what else can they ask for as children? As a parent this is enough. At the end of the film, the hero and heroine embrace each other, and the ending is different from the novel, but it is very comforting. Everything is what it is, it looks like John should be retired, Savannah Probably divorced Tim too. I don't know what to say about such an adaptation, is it good? After all, I don't really agree with the ending of the novel. Once a male star and a female star I liked announced their relationship, and many people said that they looked like golden boys and girls. I told my friend that I was very happy, because I knew how difficult it was for him to walk alone, and I also knew that he had no relatives at home. It's that simple, I think he has a home to go back to! John lost his mother at the age of one, lost contact with his comrades due to not retiring, and then lost his father. It's scary to think about living alone in this world, isn't it? Life is always hard, and John and Savannah have each other in the future, facing difficulties and spending the rest of their lives together. Be kind! So, the last shot of the movie is so beautiful.

Dear John quotes

  • Savannah Curtis: The problem with time, I've learned, whether it's those first two weeks I got to spend with you, or the final two months I got to spend with him, eventually time always runs out. I have no idea where you are out there in the world, John. But I understand that I lost the right to know these things long ago. No matter how many years go by, I know one thing to be as true as ever was - I'll see you soon then.

  • John Tyree: There's something I wanna tell you. After I got shot, you wanna know the very first thing that entered my mind? Before I blacked out? Coins. I'm eight years old again on a tour of the U.S. Mint. I'm listening to a guy explain how coins are made. How they're punched out of sheet metal. How they're rimmed and beveled. How they're stamped and cleaned. And how each and every batch of coin are personally examined just in case any of them slipped though with the slightest imperfection. That's what popped into my head. I'm a Coin of the United States Army. I was minted in the year 1980. I've been punched from sheet metal. I've been stamped and cleaned. My edges have been rimmed and beveled. But now I have two small holes in me. I'm no longer in perfect condition.
