When you meet yourself on another earth

This film can be regarded as a non-mainstream of Hollywood science fiction films. Mike Cahill came up with the idea of making a movie when he fiddled with the composite layers with final cut pro. So I wrote the script with my friend Brit Marling. I used a Sony EX3 720 to make my first feature-length feature film. I have to say that the execution is quite strong.

The structure of the story is very clever. Borrow the shell of earth 2 to tell the story of original sin and redemption. This provides flexible space for narrative. At the same time, it can improve science fiction. This shell is pretty good. The SETI scientist in the middle and the ending add a lot of flavor to the science fiction of the film.

The sound design is on and off all the way, a bit overworked, but the rendering atmosphere is very good. The Sony EX3 720p picture quality makes the picture more grainy and simple, which is convenient for visual effects, but it reduces the photography to the level of youtube video (the director said that he was greatly influenced by Krzysztof Kieslowski). Some lenses are not suitable for fast zoomin and transitions.

Brit Marling shocked the earth with fresh beauty. Is expected to become a new generation of Hollywood actresses. When the male pig's feet are vocal, I always feel that Bill Nighy's guest dubbing is a sense of contradiction. In addition, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the old Indian cleaner at the Happiness Terminal has come to his line of work in the film.

How to achieve self-redemption? Some unforgivables are permanent, and the last moment answers everything for us!

The plot is not special, the story is very simple, if it weren't for the other earth beside the moon, this movie should be regarded as a literary ethics film. But I like it so much! Photography, editing, atmosphere, heroine/screenwriter, music. This film is very beautiful, very beautiful, I keep taking screenshots...

Another Earth quotes

  • Rhoda Williams: When early explorers first set out West across the Atlantic, most people thought the world was flat. Most people thought if you sailed far enough West, you would drop off a plane into nothing. Those vessels sailing out into the unknown, they weren't carrying noblemen or aristocrats, artists or merchants. They were crewed by people living on the edge of life: the madmen, orphans, ex-convicts, outcasts like myself. As a felon, I'm an unlikely candidate for most things. But perhaps not for this. Perhaps I am the most likely.

  • Richard Berendzen: It would be very hard to think "I am over there" and "Can I go meet me?" and "Is that me better than this me?" "Can I learn from the other me?" "Has the other me made the same mistakes I've made?" Or, "Can I sit down and have a conversation with me?" Wouldn't that be an interesting thing? The truth is, we do that all day long every day. People don't admit it and they don't think about it too much, but they do. Every day, they're talking in their own head. "What's he doing?" "Why'd he do that?" "What did she think?" "Did I say the right thing?" In this case, there's another you out there.
