Gamblers hanging out in New York's underground casinos have an out-of-this-world dream -- to play in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Mike deliberately lost all his money in order to get rid of his gambling addiction and live a good life with his classmate Zuer, a law student. But the word "addiction" doesn't mean that you can quit. When outside factors invade, it will come back to life. Therefore, when Worm came out of prison, eager to pay off his gambling debts, he deliberately pulled Mike into the water, and the ashes were rekindled. Zuer took Mike's bath, touched the banknotes in his pocket, and left the house without a word. Mike hurried to the courtroom, but made a fool of himself. This completely disappointed my girlfriend. Nicknamed "The Slacker," the "bug" Worm seized the moment to fan the flames. The two finally started their "intimate" cooperation again. Mike was frustrated in love, and put his love on the loyalty of his buddies. He wanted to help the old-fashioned Worm to pay off the debt of 15,000 US dollars in five days. The condition is that Worm can't be at the same table with him. Mike knew that Worm's virtues were no different from his gambling addiction. In the city council venue, Worm violated the agreement and gambled at the same table with Mike, but Worm was exposed. The two were beaten, thrown out of the casino, and their relationship broke down.
The only love that Mike cares about is over. At this moment, the only thing left in his mind is a fantasy. But I prefer to call that thing a dream. There is a scene in the movie where Mike is watching TV at home alone. On TV was the World Series of Poker. When people face themselves alone, the desire to realize their dreams is the strongest. It is conceivable that such a scene has appeared countless times in the life of boring Mike. He sat naked on the floor, and everything in the room was dyed dreamily. How many times have we wanted to change, only to be thrown back into the norm again and again. We dare not face the dream, shout it out in public, or even reveal a few words about it in front of our loved ones. We are running away from ourselves, our talents, our dreams, our hearts.
Mike is a gifted teenager. He knows himself. Hesse wrote: "There is really only one duty for every man: to find himself. Then to keep his doctor in his heart, with all his heart, and without rest. All other paths are incomplete and man's way of escape, It's a cowardly return to popular ideals, it's going with the flow, it's the fear of the heart." Mike is lucky. Yet the movie shows us Mike at his worst. The reason for the messy life situation is nothing less than one, people always lack courage. Knowing your talent, you should give full play to it and release it to the fullest. Most of the time, this kind of talent seems to be disliked by everyone, such as gambling, such as writing. After being robbed of everything, including love, friendship, and even the future, by the hand of life, we are strangely full of courage again. Maybe just because it's the only option left.
Walking into the underground casino again, the same room, the same opponent, the same few people at the adjacent table, the thugs did not change, under the dim light, Mike finally released himself gracefully. He won back the money, won the love, and won the dream.
I saw a recommendation for "The King of Gamblers" on Pippi Film's "Good Movies": this is not a film about gambling, but a film about dreams.
At the end of the film, Mike met his ex-girlfriend at the door of the court:
