State of Play, I don't understand? (spoiler)

The cinema didn't catch up, and now the official version is out. I watched it twice and didn't understand it.
Did Ben Affleck want to kill the female secretary?
If yes, why? He dared to start a big company, he was a politician with ideals and a sense of justice, and he gambled on his future, so what good would it do for him to get rid of the undercover female secretary? Is he trying to use the media to put the crime of murder and silence on the head of the summit company, so as to bring down or discredit this large company that has gradually been upgraded to a military organization according to his investigation? But this risky move is too risky. Even if he engages in extramarital affairs, he has to go to the gambling table. If he doesn't do it well, he will burn himself into flames, and it is hard to say whether the public will believe him, a congressman whose trousers are not tight.
I think if Ben wants to kill him, then the female secretary can only have a handle on him. Of course, having an extramarital affair is a ready-made handle. I am not sure how much Ben loves him for a woman, and I am worried that the handle will fall to the top company. I have it in my hands, so I kill it.
If it wasn't for Ben to kill, it was his old acquaintance in the army who made his own decisions, and Ben wiped his ass for him, wouldn't it make sense?
