Her problem may be a young girl, but the real problem is a girl’s heart

I remember that the first time I saw the content of this film was in Crazy English. In the tape, Marlon Brando’s crazy scream almost pierced the eardrum, and Vivien Leigh’s nervous and neurotic response made people feel that this film is again. A movie that is mentally see-saw. The Chinese translation of its name itself carries a certain attractive quality, like an imperceptible call to get on this ride and head towards some unknown, degenerate but inevitable destiny.

And this was echoed at the beginning of the film: "They told me to take a street car named Desire, change the car to a place called the cemetery, take another 6 blocks, and get off at Paradise Paradise." Vivien Leigh No matter desire, cemetery to heaven, and the messy and dirty scenes of the whole film from the beginning, the irony is too strong. Blanche played by Vivien Leigh is just going to an appointment that completely destroys her own destiny.

In the final analysis, Blanche is nothing but a literary and artistic female youth who has escaped from society. She was born in a wealthy family, received a good education, admired nobility and elegance, and contemptuous. Her love died when she was young, and her husband committed suicide because of her contempt. Her sister fled her family (the reason is actually a rebellion in literature), leaving her to take care of the family and face the death of her relatives. In fact, it is not difficult to infer that the women who can talk hard with their husbands are all bloody women. Blanche must have been outspoken when he was young, but her husband is obviously a glass-hearted man. He shot himself to heaven with a bullet, but at the same time he shot his wife. Sent to hell. After all, her husband's death had too much influence on her. In the following narrative, Blanche kept remembering the music at the time, the gunshots, and the words he had said, and he kept a pile of love letters. As a slender literary and artistic young woman, because one sentence will push her beloved away from her forever, it may be enough for her to torture herself for a lifetime. Later, she was the only one in the family who was struggling to support herself. The deaths of her relatives came one after another, and she couldn't breathe under the pressure of the economy, which undoubtedly forced her to recall her husband's death over and over again, which was actually overwhelming for her. At the beginning of the film, in the conversation with her sister, she sometimes commented on her sister's situation like a child, and in a blink of an eye she took up a dignified lady to talk about the scene. In fact, her spirit has been in extreme depression and see-saw. People are on the verge of madness.

On the surface, this is just a journey for a woman who needs a vacation to visit her younger sister. However, under the persistent search of her brother-in-law who was out of sync with her at the beginning, the viewer quickly discovered that Blanche was full of lies all over her body. The student got involved and lost her job. This was the reason why she defected to her sister. It is not difficult to find that since her husband committed suicide in her early years, she has been immersed in the past. His husband has stopped forever at the age of 17, and in her heart, she has also stopped forever in the beautiful past. Young boys always have an uncontrollable attraction to her. Even a young boy who came over to collect the fee made her kiss him with no exclusion. Her sister began to tell her husband from the beginning of the movie: "praise her for her beauty", and at the end of the movie she also told her neighbors: "praise her for being good". She herself has been fulfilling this promise and basically praised her sister's appearance from the beginning. To the end. Who cares so much about your own image in the minds of others, and cares so much about being paranoid? The answer is only children, or girls. On the other hand, the few female images in the film basically don't pay much attention to their appearance. A mistress with a 30-year-old face, but with a girlish heart, then make an inference, is it possible for such a person to bear the constant death of his relatives? Does she feel that her behavior is incompatible with everyone's eyes? Will she adjust her behavior to suit her age? The answer is of course not all. She only feels that the world is dirty, she is uniquely independent, and at the same time constructs a perfect world in her mind. This world is "gentleman's", which is in contact with her childhood, or the world she selectively remembers, once again coincide. After all, she is just a child who never wants to grow up.

When Blanche came to her sister's house, while constructing her own imaginary life, she was constantly being pulled by reality. It is conceivable that in her hometown, she must stay away from everyone and laugh at will. But when she came to her sister's house, she had to face the ill-will and vulgarity. Marlon Brando did a good job. He portrayed a complete villain and made people totally hate him. It was the man who did not deal with this matter and his sister-in-law desperately tore up her only fantasy about life, broke her psychological city, and then violated her, physically also shattered her defenses, and turned her into a lunatic. So in the end, the poor woman had to say pitifully: "I always trust a kind stranger." Yes, her acquaintances betrayed her and handed her into the hands of the lunatic asylum. She fell to the ground and trampled on her last nobility and elegance. But she will never turn back into an adult. In the end, she smiled innocently, like a child who accepted the candy from a stranger and began to know others, and put her hand in the hands of the doctor in the lunatic asylum. Stepping out, getting in the car, she walked blankly to the imaginary world she had built, a kind of paradise.

Leigh played Blanche so well, so well, so well that it hurts. It's terrifying that Leigh can let people see part of himself in such a character. Desire, vanity, lies, these words that accompany a woman's life, burst out so concentrated and sharply.

8.4 Revisited on the big screen at the Logan Theater, such a perfect masterpiece, Blanche is a character spoiled by the hypocrisy, emptiness and sweet talk of the upper class. She is trapped in the fantasy fairy tale woven by herself and cannot get out. Stanley and her The antagonism of the two classes is essentially the antagonism of the inherent flaws of the two classes, and the departure of the old class at the end corresponds very well with the awakening of the new women. Vivien Leigh's performance is amazing, perfectly portraying this poor and pathetic woman

A Streetcar Named Desire quotes

  • Mitch: Oh I don't mind you being older than what I thought. But all the rest of it. That pitch about your ideals being so old-fashioned and all the malarkey that you've been dishin' out all summer. Oh, I knew you weren't sixteen anymore. But I was fool enough to believe you was straight."

  • Blanche: Straight? What's 'straight'? A line can be straight, or a street. But the heart of a human being?
