In the summer of 2005, I happened to chat with Sister Guorong and said that "The Bicycle Stealer" was good, but I only watched it today.
The straightforward narrative reminds me of those black and white Cantonese feature films in Hong Kong back then.
At the beginning of the film, the whole story is explained, because there is a job that requires bicycles. Then it narrates the difficulty of buying a bicycle, constantly expressing the protagonist's longing for work and the eager anticipation of the whole family. On the first day of work, the father and son were in high spirits, and the son was not happy to be in front of the bicycle, but the film took a sharp turn and the bicycle was stolen.
The search for a bicycle is the subject of the film. I lost my bike and reported to the police, but unfortunately the police would not pay attention to such a case. From here, the protagonist is destined to be a 'cup'. He couldn't give up on his own, and it was easier said than done to find it. The only way to go home is to take the bus, long queues, and crowds. The film once again shows the significance of losing a bicycle to the protagonist.
Then began the Don Quixote-like experience of looking for a car, looking for a repair shop, looking for a distribution center and so on. During the period, the father was reminded to be careful about his son, because someone tried to abduct him. But it seems that my father has no mind at all. He only has bicycles on his mind. He did not let go of all the clues, and acted resolutely, calling the police if he called the police.
In the end, the people who accompanied them to find the car dispersed, leaving only the father and son, and suddenly it started to rain heavily. The father walked in front, and the son fell to the ground without realizing it. After a while, my father asked, what happened? At this time, the son held back for a long time, very aggrieved, and said loudly, "Fall down!" His father was speechless and gave him a handkerchief, his eyes still staring blankly ahead.
Later, I finally found a new clue, the old man, after a contest, you came and I went back and forth, and finally started a chase near the church, all the way to the river. Still no result. But the father heard someone falling into the water and called for help. When the father did not see his son, he thought it was him, and hurriedly pursued it until he found out that it was not. And the son is sitting on the steps far away, depressed alone. The father was relieved at once, his brows widened, and the matter of looking for a car was put aside for the time being. The father takes his son to the restaurant for a good meal. In the restaurant, looking at the wealthy family with young boys and girls sitting next door, the father asked his son to calculate his monthly salary to express to him the meaning of work to him and the whole family. And all of this will be lost because of the loss of the bike. The son seemed to understand.
Finally, my father, with all his efforts, caught the thief in the brothel, but the most desperate thing was that he couldn't get the bike back after he caught it. Just like looking for an old man in a church, every time the place closest to success is crowded, but these people are just boring spectators or are themselves a group of enemies. The isolated father is always stubborn in the crowd. And the son followed suit. It was only when he arrived at the brothel that his son was too shy to go in. The film does not hesitate to express his innocence.
At the climax of the film, the father, helpless, walked to the street with his son. At this time, there happened to be a bicycle race. The bicycles whizzed past, and the bicycles were driven away and put back, which stimulated the eyes of the father and the audience. Not far away, a bicycle was parked in an uninhabited alley.
The father gave his son some change to drive him home on the bus, then turned around and walked towards the car. . .
In the end, the father was caught, and the son saw it from a distance and ran to his father. The crowd accused the father of teaching his son badly. Father never spoke. The bicycle owner watched as his son spared his father. The father and son shook hands and disappeared into the crowd.
Rome in 1948 was still in shambles. Poverty of life is manifested in many places. The director's new realistic expression method created an era, and there may be many films of the same type in the future, but such a film is still unsightly after watching it.
