Uneven, unbalanced

The movie is not as bad as one expects. Much of the saving-grace comes from the wonderfully atmospheric cinematography and editing in the first 20 minutes of the film, assisted by a competent soundtrack. The camera resembles a pair of eyes in a restrained nightmare : the view from these eyes is depressive, wistful, and somewhat surreal. This is what saves it from the run-of-the-mill boredom of a Hollywood airplane thriller.

The quality of the suspense is not high. An experienced cinema- goer expects that, at some point, he will be disappointed; but one doesn't expect to be handled so carelessly. What a waste, for a suspense painstakingly built up over one hour screen time of reasonable production value.

Jodie Foster has acquired a withered look over the years, that is put to good use here in the role of a distraught mother. What always bothers me is the habitual detachment in Foster's performance: no matter what a wrenching despair she puts herself in, her eyes and her intonement seem to always suggest that she's not quite there.

It's a miracle to be able to watch it, if it weren't for Jodie Foster, I would have given up long ago.

The plot is average, so I can't say it's bad; the actors were really chosen right, and I really wanted to scold my mother in the first half, and I really thought Kyle was a paranoid. There are a lot of small wrists in the film, so it's not bad.
