【Isaiah 59:4】There is no one who pleads righteously, and no one speaks in truth, but all rely on falsehood and tell lies. What is conceived is poison, what is born is iniquity.
Writing this movie review, according to the past habits, spoilers at the beginning: the characters in this movie are all lying, and no one is telling the truth.
Then, following my usual habit, what I have to do is write a story that has nothing to do with the movie to express my subjective opinion about the movie. The next thing to write down is the story of the Five Jade Butterfly:
Once upon a time there was a wise monarch, thirsty for talents, and ordered his prime minister to find the best talents, so that he could be a master to teach the prince to learn. This prime minister is also a very smart person. He traveled all over the country and finally found three extremely smart young people. Since the king only has one person, the prime minister is very difficult. How should he assess the three to determine who is the most suitable one? What about the candidates? The prime minister thought about it for a long time, and finally came up with a method. He summoned the three of them and pointed to five jade plates and said to them:
"Among the five jade plates, three are blue and two are green. I will cover your eyes and place a jade plate on each person's head. When I remove the cover, you can only see You can't see the jade plate on other people's heads; you are not allowed to talk to each other, and you are not allowed to gesture with each other. Those who violate the rules will be immediately executed. The first person to correctly infer the color of the jade plate on his head It will be the best choice for Taifu, if anyone answers casually and answers incorrectly, they will be executed immediately!"
After the prime minister had finished speaking, he blindfolded the eyes of three wise men, placed a jade plate on each of their heads, and removed the shawls. The three of you looked at me and I looked at you. For a long time, no one spoke. Finally, someone finally figured it out and deduced the color of the jade plate on his head. He became the king's grandfather, and later became a prime minister, enjoying glory and wealth all his life.
The perfect answer about Wuyudie
Can we know what color jade plate is on the three people's heads? In terms of logical inference, there is the following perfect answer: taking one of the three as the main body, there are three logically possible combinations for him: two green, one blue, one green, two blue, Three blue ones. If there are two people with green discs on their heads, one of them will notice and react immediately. Since the three of them have seen each other for a long time, the first logic may be ruled out. And if there is a possibility of one green and two blues, there will be one person who is a green disc. For example, the main body A, he will see two blue discs. What he is not sure about is whether he is a green disc. In the case where direct communication is not possible The only thing he can do is to refer to the pauses of two people who are not the subject: A's reference to the actions of those who are not A will lead to two thoughts: A. If I am green, the two blue ones I see Will quickly realize that he is blue. B. I will go and declare that I am a green disc, because it is better for me to identify myself than to identify me as not blue through others. In the case of A, every non-A person sees two jade plates, one blue and one green. If A hesitates, the non-A person will know that he must be blue, because the non-A person only needs to exclude Two green ones and one blue one may determine the color of your jade plate. And A infers B from A’s argument, that is, making a judgment based on the actions of people who are not A may make the two non-A people faster than themselves by an interval time. When A uses non-A as a reference, non-A will People with A also use A as a reference, and can make judgments faster than A. And B's argument is essentially a self-judgment. Since he can no longer be deduced by others, he can only make self-affirming judgments. However, this is blind and prohibited by the rules. Just taking the risk of answering casually and answering incorrectly, you will be immediately executed. This risk is caused by the last logic that all three are blue jade plates. For Xia, the logic that all three are blue jade plates may be the only choice he has to face, because he has introduced the form of "just others", and only in their own time equality can they discover their own characteristics. He saw two blue discs on the heads of people who weren't him, and wasn't sure if he was too.
Fortunately, we know the final result of this story - three people look at me, I look at you, for a long time, no one spoke. Finally, someone finally figured it out and deduced the color of the jade plate on his head. He became the king's grandfather, and later became a prime minister, enjoying the glory and wealth all his life - so the perfect answer must be that the three jade butterflies are all blue!
Completion of the perfect answer
However, if the analysis is made purely with A as the main body, it is obvious that no conclusion can be drawn. If someone other than A, when the second logic is possible, sees A's hesitation and intentionally harms him, forcing him to make a desperate attempt, or the two collude to harm A, there will also be a situation where all three hesitate for a long time. What color the disc is, making the final decision and giving rise to some possibility is still a pre-set armor.
The above story, which has nothing to do with this movie, was written on my blog on February 18, 2010. After watching this movie, I often think of the story of the Five Jade Butterfly. In justification or rejection, human existence denies future transcendence. But this negation is not observed. When a woodcutter outside Rashomon defends himself for stealing an axe, it's hard for listeners to hear a denial of the act in his account. Because of the unity in the narrative, the storyteller is able to eliminate what is proposed in the story to convince people that what he wants people to believe is not believed. His affirmation is for negation, and his negation is for affirmation. People will compare this sly narrative to a lie. People also confuse a person's self-deception in a narrative with his lying about himself. Lying is a negative attitude. The liar fully understands the truth that he has covered up, and no one will lie about what he does not understand. A liar affirms in himself and denies in speaking. Lying is what Heidegger calls co-presence, which presupposes my existence, the existence of others, my existence for others, and the existence of others for me. Therefore, existence also assumes that the liar should plan the lie completely soberly, and have an understanding of the lie and the altered truth. The situation of people who deceive themselves is very different from that of people who willfully lie. In Rashomon, who is the liar and who is the self-deceiver?
