Who is Richard Ayouad? The geek in "IT Mad Men"? The man named "London's coolest" by "NME" magazine? Or is it a guy who is extremely shy and humble under the screen, "curled behind his glasses" and afraid of chatting with people? So, what would it look like if he made a movie? Wes Anderson's retro little freshness? Sensitive, talkative but interesting? You guessed it, but it's more than that.
The 33-year-old Richard Ayouad finally completed his directorial debut "Submarine"-a movie made up of weird trivia and kaleidoscope-like images. "I don't know if I'm in puberty, but I'm really old enough, and I feel like I'm shrinking." Let's follow Oliver Tate-a serious, self, and morally small version of Woody Allen- Back in South Wales in the 1980s, that record player, typewriter, and horn buttoned woolen coat were still in fashion, sad and sweet adolescence.
From the beginning of the story, you know that 15-year-old Oliver Tate is a "cunning" kid. He likes to spy and be a manipulator. His narration is not credible. He fantasized about his death, the trembling voice of the teacher, the shocked faces of his classmates, and the flowers on the playground. The local news even reported it as "Welsh Regret". In fact, Tate is an unwelcome child. He has only two simple wishes. The first is to end his virgin career before the age of 16, and the second is to save his parents' marriage. In the end, you know, he messed them all up.
"Submarine" is adapted from Joe Dunthorne's novel of the same name, but Richard Ayouad pushed the time of the story forward to the 80s, creating a strange sense of contradiction (he is not like the audience Which arouses homesickness). Just like his protagonist Tate, the film’s images are sharp, smart and narcissistic, with fast editing and old home videos interspersed with Tate’s fast narration and Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) soundtrack, just like The juvenile's hormonal jump. It is reminiscent of the naughty minds of those masters of the New Wave, and the challenge to the laws of narrative and video. Fancy, it's too fancy.
However, I need to be reminded here: if you think of "Submarine" as that very popular and refreshing, you will definitely think the film has a weird pace, it is simply pulling the audience and the nose to ramming wildly while combing the obsolete Bob. Jordana, the heroine of the head, is really... ugly. Don't try to do the sadness of youth that has passed away in "Submarine". Richard Ayouad told us that it's good to grow up. You won't use a lighter to burn other people's legs.

Submarine quotes

  • Oliver Tate: He wasn't even considered hard until the Watkin twins famously stabbed him in the back with compasses. He said nothing; showed no discomfort as his shirt blossomed with blood poppies. His stoicism reminded me of the brave men who died in the First World War.

  • Lloyd Tate: Listen, look, i know you think I'm very boring, you know... but once i ripped my vest off in front of a woman, and err... it was very effective actually. It produced a very atavistic response.
