Revisiting Drilling Operations

It is a rare disaster movie about oil. On the one hand, I graduated from Petroleum University and have a more or less understanding of oil. On the other hand, I have also practiced in the front line of drilling, and I have the experience of empathy. The movie is still good, the main focus is on the aftermath of the accident, and the oil drilling is not too descriptive.

Many familiar terms, BOP, DP, Rig, kill pipe, mud, etc.; there are also many familiar equipment, top drives, slips, iron drillers, drill pipes, blowout preventers, vibrators, etc.; there are many familiar position, footman, driller, toolpusher, supervisor, electric engineer, etc.; familiar operation process, cementing, logging, drilling, etc.

I have also worked on land drilling platforms, and I know that the conditions in various aspects are incomparable to those of offshore platforms, but there are still many similarities. In reality, as the supervisor of Party A, he also attaches great importance to the drilling progress, because drilling is charged on a daily basis. If the well is completed in advance, a large amount of cost will be left, and the supervisor will also receive bonuses. The cost of offshore drilling platforms is higher. The daily rent is also more expensive. After a rough search on the Internet, the daily rate of a deep-sea drilling platform like the Deep Sea Horizon is estimated to be around US$500,000. If there is no drilling operation, the rate will be reduced accordingly. Therefore, the film is 43 days behind schedule. It's really stressful. Although the drilling party can get rewards for completing the well ahead of schedule, it is only a small amount compared to the daily fee. If the drilling is not stopped due to Party B's reasons, the daily fee will still be paid. Therefore, there is a conflict of interest between Party B and Party A in the drilling progress. , so when encountering difficulties, Party A generally does not follow the advice of Party B’s team leader and driller, but makes decisions entirely by itself.

Drilling operations generally involve three parties. For example, in the film, the owner of the oil well is BP, which is a large party. It has the ability to process and sell oil, but is not good at engineering operations; Halliburton is the contractor who is the party A. , has rich and professional petroleum engineering operation capabilities and engineer reserves, but no hardware equipment; Halliburton subcontracts the drilling operation to transoceanic drilling, and subcontracts the cementing operation to Schlumberger. It's strange that Halliburton is not mentioned in the film, which is a little strange.

Drilling still pays great attention to safety, and there should be no blowout caused by human error as in the film. Although the drilling engineering has been developed for decades, there are still many unknowns. There are too many risk factors when it goes deeper than 4,000 meters underground. But there are only a handful of big accidents like blowouts. After all, there are still many insurance measures, but none of them took effect in this movie. The rubber of the annular blowout preventer was punctured, and the shear ram was also punctured. , resulting in the inability to follow-up operations such as well killing. I can understand the high pressure, but why there are so many solid objects, and even the shear ram is interrupted.

There is no HSE position in the film, but the platform manager has taken on such a responsibility, which is somewhat different.

I just watched it, and it was really shocking, especially the scene of the oil blowout burning and bursting. The details and the picture are very reductive. After watching the movie, we have a deeper understanding of the difficulty of oil workers and businessmen in order to save costs. Terrible faces of big interests. Finally, I hope that China can also make more excellent disaster films. You can go watch this movie.

Deepwater Horizon quotes

  • Jimmy Harrell: Don, you and I both know we need some downtime for maintenance. Mike, how many of our machines need repair?

Mike Williams: Uh... 390, Mr. Jimmy.

    Vidrine: 390?

Mike Williams: Yes, sir. Almost ten perecent of all the machinery aboard.

Vidrine: Name a few for me.

    Mike Williams: A few?

Vidrine: Mm-hm. I would love to hear exactly what piece of mission-critical equipment are down.

Mike Williams: Shit, where do I start? "A" drilling chair. Process Station 18. BOP control pods. Telephone system. Pipe-racking system. GPS antenna. DirecTV system. Wireless Internet. Iron roughneck. Top drive rack back system. Auxiliary-draw works control. Salt water service pumps. Smoke alarms in the galley. And the reason why you're sweatin' so hard is 'cause the compressor for the AC on this deck are down, too.

Kaluza: Everything but the toilets, huh?

Mike Williams: No, no, you got problems there, too, but I don't do shitters. That's Engineering.

    Vidrine: Who are you?

  • Felicia: I just had the craziest dream. Wow.

Mike Williams: Wow? Wow. Was I in it?

Felicia: I was... no. I was at a concert, and then on the side of the stage there was this... it was like a two-legged rabbit and...

Mike Williams: Mm, I don't know what part of that is more terrifying.

Felicia: Listen to me. Listen to me. I would move... and then it would mimic everything I was doing.

Mike Williams: Oh, don't tell me any more, because I know where this is going.

Felicia: I think the rabbit was my...

    Mike WilliamsFelicia: Mother.

Mike Williams: Yes, I know. Thank you. Now it's my nightmare.
