Hello everyone, I'm Alaska with glasses and a microphone. If there is an absolute king list in the horror film world, Kubrick's "The Shining" cannot escape the top three.
The story of the film revolves around a desolate mountain hotel. The protagonist Jack, an alcoholic and frustrated writer, takes his family to a hotel that was closed due to heavy snow as a caretaker. Needless to say, you will also guess that this hotel is not simple, and all of Jack's family have encountered supernatural phenomena here.
Jack's son, Danny, is gifted with a super power called "The Shining", which can see ghosts and foresee danger. But even with this ability, Danny didn't stop his father from going mad. Crazy Jack chases and kills his wife and children in the hotel.
At the end of the movie, Danny and his mother escape, and Jack becomes another monster in the hotel. "The Shining" pioneered the creation of many horror movies. The blood-gushing elevator doors and the twins in the corridor were all groundbreaking in the 1980s.
But also because director Kubrick filled in a lot of dark colors in "The Shining", which made the original author Stephen King very upset. This gossip between Kushen and Lao Jin has also become the most well-known "author dissatisfaction" in the film adaptation of the original book.
This year, a movie called "Doctor Sleep" came out, based on Stephen King's sequel to "The Shining." Its director once directed the high-scoring horror drama "Ghost Invasion", starring Ewan McGregor in "Big Fish" and "Trainspotting". This lineup seems to indicate that "Doctor Sleep" is of good quality. Stephen King also gave the adaptation a thumbs up.
*The film was released in Taiwan in November, translated as "Doctor Sleeping". With anticipation, I tasted "Doctor Sleep". I think fans of Kubrick, fans of the movie version of The Shining, can wash and sleep. It will make you angry and disappointed. Because "Doctor Sleep" is a superpower battle, there is no depth, and the sense of horror is limited to visual stimulation. If you look at it as a pure horror movie, this movie is too long and uncreative, and 6 points are barely.
Although the plot of "Doctor Sleep" is based on the sequel to the novel, most of its plots are indeed the continuation of the movie version of "The Shining". After escaping from the haunted hotel, Danny grew up slowly, because of the horror experience as a child, Danny's mental world was in chaos. Like his father, he also suffered from alcoholism.
With the death of his mother, Danny was left alone. His "Shining," or superpowers, has always plagued him. He often saw ghosts in the inn, and he often saw the tragic death of people in the world. In the previous work, there was a black chef in the hotel. He also had superpowers, and he was the only person who could understand Danny.
But in the previous film, he was hacked to death by Danny's father with an axe. In the real world, Danny has no one to talk to. Speaking of the story, the friends with more experience in watching movies probably guessed the next plot. Of course Danny isn't the only superpower in the world. In the world of movies, not only are there many superpowers, but a small number of them have secretly formed a society. The main activity of this society is to hunt other children with superpowers, and then suck their energy.
When their evil deeds are discovered by Danny, he also welcomes a fighting partner - a little black girl full of energy. So Danny and the girl formed the Justice League and began to fight against the evil superpower society.
The general story of "Doctor Sleep" is that two groups of people fought each other, and the final battlefield returned to the hotel in the previous work. To be honest, this movie is said to be a horror movie, but it has the core of a superhero movie. It doesn't matter, you have to play dazzling enough, and it's not a loss for 2 and a half hours.
Moreover, the villains who suck the energy of others are all very bluffing to look at. In the end, guess what, they were killed by ordinary shotguns in the second half of the movie.
*There is also a direct car accident and was killed... This makes the final supernatural showdown between good and evil a bit nondescript, and a few shots can solve the problem, and it doesn't need to be weird. The most powerful villain in the whole film is an aunt wearing a magician's hat.
Aunt's appearance is really ugly, and I don't know if she was the "Deadly Woman" in "Mission Impossible 5" without checking the information.
Her super powers are mainly magic and wandering. Although her aura is 18,000, her fighting power is all in her mouth. In the villain team, I think the only one who can fight is the short-haired girl who can hypnotize others anytime, anywhere. At least before they die, they can hypnotize the murderer to commit suicide.
Aunt's death seemed very random. She was killed in the movie, and it was Danny who led her to the hotel, and then released the ghost inside, and a shadowy soldier came across the border. It feels like this scene is entirely to make the fans of "The Shining" movie addicted. Because the classic ghosts familiar to many fans have revealed their faces.
To pay tribute, the film also found a special actor to play the young Jack. The actor looks like Nicholson, who plays Jack, but is a size smaller than Nicholson.
There are also some classic clips from the original work, such as "Fence Maze Tracking", "Axe-Holding Confrontation on the Stairs", and "The Face of the Broken Door". Especially in "Fence Maze Tracking", the crew restored the desperate maze, and the restoration was good.
But as a fan of The Shining, these tributes can sense the creator's intentions, but they look embarrassing to me. When the fake version of Jack appeared, I thought it was going to be a bad thing. Sure enough, as soon as the special actor spoke, he was discouraged. After all, Nicholson, the three-time Oscar-winning actor, can't be imitated by just any actor.
Speaking of acting, Ewan McGregor, who played Danny, turned a corner when he tried to imitate Nicholson. He was possessed by Jack, and like his father, he held an axe, twisting and chasing him. But it was only formal, because there was not a trace of madness in Ivan's eyes. In the end, special effects help.
Finally, let's talk about the little black girl who plays a very important role in the film. She and Danny formed the Justice League to deal with the evil society, and because of her amazing talent, she could single-handedly take on the villain, Aunt BOSS. The movie wants to portray her as a character who is firm-willed, hates evil and is willing to confront toughness.
It's a pity that this little actor lacked effective performance guidance, and he kept an "I'm very arrogant" expression until the end. After the girl's father was killed by the bad guy, the girl cried for a while, and then she still kept her arrogant expression unchanged. This led to the subsequent plot, every time the little girl appeared on the scene, I directly appeared in the play.
I don't know why Stephen King gave this adaptation a thumbs up, but guess what, it should be that this movie "respects and restores the original". At that time, Stephen King was dissatisfied with Kubrick's version of "The Shining". The most important point was that he changed an important plot in the original work. In the original work, the black chef who helped Danny escape from the hotel was not killed by Jack with an axe. He finally rescued Danny and his mother. But in the movie, the black chef died very tragically.
This change completely separates the movie version of The Shining from the bright ending of the original. This adaptation is a matter of opinion. I think it enhances the sense of despair in "The Shining", and also makes Jack's madness into the madness of the whole plot. Because the movie version of "The Shining" has been recreated on the basis of the original book, the amount of detail has also been multiplied. Some people even made a documentary to interpret the various metaphors in the movie version of "The Shining".
The best adaptation is actually the movie belongs to the movie, and the literature belongs to the literature, forming a universe with each other. This time, "Doctor Sleep", which "respects the original work", has suffered from the waterloo of word of mouth, which is evident. It may also have vigilant implications for many remakes.
Let's see you tomorrow, goodbye.
