Movie Review: The Master

7.5 points. I was a little disappointed after watching it, probably because my expectations were too high. The rhythm of the whole movie is suspected of being out of control, procrastinating and lacking in drama, or, in other words, being too gentle. The only thing I liked is the scene where the master confronts the doubters, which is a rather sharp confrontation. After all, for cults, the only way to deal with rational doubts is to use subjective propositions to steal concepts. Hoffman's performance is still wonderful, but a little bit too much. I think Phoenix's performance is a little too hard. But overall, relative to the story, the performance is still the biggest highlight.

The soundtrack is not surprising, but the form and content are still weird. The various forms of hallucinations—recollections, imaginations, lies, and hysteria—are told in a common, realistic way, and flashbacks are also used without mystique. In fact, that's right, the contents of those hallucinations are all very real, such as the grief of World War II, homeland and love, and desperate trust. Sure enough, the distance between PTA and mainstream Hollywood is very clear, so clear that it is difficult for people to adapt.

    High-level flickering; very beautiful.

The Master quotes

  • Clark: [talking to Freddy about Doris during a test] She got rid of you, right? She saw you for what you are. Selfish. And alone. You should go into the hospital with your mother. 'Cause that's where you belong. 'Cause you're sick. And you're tired. And you need to be alone, away from people.

  • V.A. representative addressing returning veterans: You men are blessed with the rejuvenating powers of youth. The responsibilities of peacetime must now be considered. You can start a business: filling station, grocery or hardware store. Get a few acres of land and raise some chickens... go back to school.

V.A. representative addressing returning veterans: [continues] Undoubtedly, there will be people on the outside who will not understand the condition you men have, or will think it a rather shameful condition. If the average civilian had been through the same stresses that you have been through, undoubtedly they too would have developed the same nervous conditions.
