This is a fable.
Two people guard the lighthouse, like torturers in life. Strong winds and heavy rains, desolate winds and bitter rains, and difficult environments make people delusional, lost, fearful, and have inexplicable expectations.
The tone of the black-and-white film, the subtlety of lighting and composition, and the powerful and real expressions of the actors give the audience a surreal feeling.
It's not the silence of "Horse of Turin," but it has the same roughness. The director is a genius. This highly stylized film gives the director a masterful look.
The lines of the two actors are excellent. They drink, dance, and fight in such a poor environment. They are like human beings exiled by God, and they are like a father and son who have to endure. Seabirds, boilers, coal, mermaids (sea monsters)... everything seems both ordinary and weird. Probably the best black and white film of the year.
