"Edge of Darkness" cannot be said to be the kind of must-see film, but those who are interested in Mel Gibson still have to watch it. In Hollywood, there are not many generalists like him, who can act, direct, and edit. Although he is not the one with the highest achievement, he must not be ignored. He starred in the "Deadly Weapon" series and "Mad Max". The series has become a classic. Others like "Patriots" and "We were Warriors" have also left a deep impression on people. As a director, he directed "Brave Heart", "The Passion of the Christ" and "Revelation" have also achieved great success. Moreover, the news outside the film, although there are many scandals, has finally been in the whirlpool of public opinion. Therefore, when "Edge of Darkness" came out, the attraction was still there, not to mention the gimmick that has not starred in a movie for 7 years. I really want to let people see what kind of state Mel Gibson looks like after seven years of itching? These are one of the many tipping points when "Edge of Darkness" came out. Two years later, I watched this film again. The controversy at that time has passed, and only pure viewing is left. This is also pretty good. The mentality of watching the movie is clean and pure.
But in terms of the story, the current "Edge of Darkness" is actually quite worth seeing. An organization colluding with government and business, under the banner of state secrets, is producing nuclear weapons for regions outside the United States, and the products produced are completely irrelevant to the United States. This law of illegal businessmen is guilty of crimes against humanity, so they have established a strict confidentiality system. Anyone who leaks the information will be killed. As a result, an idealistic intern wanted to form a group to expose this production organization to the public, so that it would be severely criticized and shut down. But the organization's skill is to let all these saboteurs die, so they give them a bog, kill them with poison, and then create the illusion that some of them are drowning. But one of the girls had to be killed because of a serious threat. She was also shot and killed at the door of her house without time to reveal any news. Moreover, the scene of the shooting subtly shifted the doubts to the little girl's father. The organization's calculations seem to be very clever, but they did not calculate that the girl's father is a policeman, and he set out on his own to investigate many suspicious points. Finally, the entire conspiracy was exposed, although the price was that the father eventually died. But their father and daughter have saved more people and done the greatest good. From the company's perspective, their plans and calculations seem to be seamless, but they did not calculate the determination of a father who lost his daughter. Thus, this determination became the wing of the butterfly in the South Pacific. The butterfly stirred its own wings, and then triggered a series of reactions, which eventually led to the complete collapse of the whole situation. This is a typical "butterfly effect" example.
The angle changed. From the perspective of the police father, his daughter was suddenly killed, and she was right in front of her door, right in front of her own eyes. The pain of loss made him have to fight back, and traced it bit by bit like peeling cocoons, and finally discovered a shocking secret. Just like the domino effect, the initial piece does not generate much energy, but as long as the first domino completes its collapse, it will lead to the collapse of all the subsequent dominoes, so the energy becomes greater and more destructive. The bigger it is, it can finally destroy the seemingly impossible truth.
The "butterfly effect" and the "domino effect" have become two sides of a gold coin in "Edge of Darkness". The film chooses the latter. Mel Gibson's performance is not bad, he did not humiliate his accumulated reputation, although, he did not win too many extra points. In fact, the film can perform better, but it is a pity that it failed to do so.
