The theme is interesting, but the narrative is messy

Lan Xiaohuan’s "A Change in Mind" mentions this movie, and the setting inside is quite special, so I specially found it to have a look.
After watching it, I felt that the theme was a bit interesting, but the narrative was rather chaotic. The

movie used mysterious power to torture human nature, but I only saw the hypocrisy.
The person who receives the box judges his life and death at will because of his own desires, and cannot stick to himself and humanity. However, what is the power to control all of this to punish others? Moreover, it tempts people to the extreme but does not explain it, and then judges after the fact. Isn't this hypocrisy?

The Box quotes

  • Martin Teague: Sir? If you don't mind my asking... why a box?

Arlington Steward: Your home is a box. Your car is a box on wheels. You drive to work in it. You drive home in it. You sit in your home, staring into a box. It erodes your soul, while the box that is your body inevitably withers... then dies. Whereupon it is placed in the ultimate box, to slowly decompose.

Martin Teague: It's quite depressing, if you think of it that way.

Arlington Steward: Don't think of it that way... think of it as a temporary state of being.

  • Arlington Steward: I'm sorry, but I have a very busy day.
